TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? The Indiana State University Sycamore track & field team hosted the third of three Open Indoor Track & Field meets in the north gymnasium of the ISU Arena on Monday and again attracted a large number of athletes from Indiana State and throughout the Wabash Valley.
Indiana State's Patty Merrion captured the women's 400 meters in 1:03.42 edging Martinsville TC's Sydney Race, who was second in 1:04.34, and Terre Haute North TC's Ashley Burkins, who finished third in 1:05.14. Burkins edged ISU's Rochanda Johnson and Merrion by just a tenth of a second in the 55 meter dash with Burkins winning in 7.78, Johnson second in 7.88 and Merrion third in 7.90.
The 800 meters was won by Terre Haute North TC's Tapring Goatee in 2:24.02 who also captured the mile run in 5:23.42. Indiana State's Hanna Mercer was second in the 800 meters in 2:29.98 with ISU's Kristy Twitchell third in 2:32.16. Katelyn Isbell was third in the mile for Indiana State with a time of 6:10.73.
Taurie Whitton, running unattached, won the 3,000 meters in 11:17.61 and Sara Alsman of Vincennes won the 55 meter hurdles in 9.62.
Terre Haute North TC's Laura Mayer won the high jump with a jump of 4'-7.75” (1.42m) while teammate Erin Keilly won the pole vault with a vault of 8'-6” (2.59m). Martinsville TC's Syndey Race won the long jump with a jump of 15'-7” (4.75m), Vincennes Liza Chandler took first in the weight throw with a toss of 40'-0.75” (12.21m), and Morgan Ford, competing unattached, won the shot put with a heave of 40'-4.25” (12.30m).
Indiana State's Robert Webb, who was competing unattached in the Open as did the rest of the ISU student-athletes, had a busy night as he won the long jump with a leap of 21'-4” (6.50m), finished third in the shot put with a throw of 27'-5.25” (8.93m), and fourth in the 55 meter hurdles in a time of 8.53.
ISU's David Ertel, also competing unattached, won the 400 meters in 55.02, Corey Hahn took first in the 800 meters in 2:03.74, Sean Dietrich first in the mile run with a time of 4:54.85, and Derek Stinefield held off teammate Andrew Sullivan to win the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:07.66. Sullivan was second in 9:26.56.
Duane Brown, running unattached, won the 55 meter dash in a race where the top four finishers were within a tenth of a second. Brown won in 6.84 with Vincennes Gene Bradford second in 6.90, Fernando Fernadez (unattached) third in 6.95, and Terre Haute North TC's Tim Swank third in 6.97. Brown also ran away with the 55 meter hurdles with a winning time of 8.06.
Jonathon Christensen (unattached) won the men's high jump with a jump of 6'-7.75” (2.03m) while Michael Wanhainen (unattached) was first in the pole vault with a vault of 15'-0”. Terre Haute North TC's Cam Quinn took first in the triple jump with a jump of 326'-2.75” (11.04m) with Brian West, competing unattached, winning the shot put with a heave of 44'-7” (13.59m).
