TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? The Indiana State University Sycamore track & field team hosted the first of three Open Indoor Track & Field meets in the north gymnasium of the ISU Arena on Thursday with a large number of athletes competing.
The event is open to any interested athlete with a small registration fee. Indiana State students can sign up and compete for free. The other two events will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, and Monday, Jan. 25, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the north gymnasium.
On the women's side, Shelby Higgingbottom, running unattached, won a pair of events Thursday as she went 17'-3.5” (1.98m) to win the long jump and held off Indiana State's Patricia Merrion in the final meters to take the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.17. Merrion was second in 1:02.51.
Ogechi Nwordu, running unattached, ran away from the field to capture the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.35 with Merrion second in 7.84. Unattached runner Jordyn Stowers ran away with the 800 meters with a time of 3:19.05 and Katie Sands, from the Northeast Dubois Track Club, taking the 3,000 meters in 12:27.07.
Indiana State's Kristy Twitchell was able to hold off teammate Kate Tarr to capture the mile run with a time of 5:38.96. Tarr finished in 5:39.65.
Morgan Ford from the Plainfield Track Club, won the shot put with a throw of 43'-8” (13.31m) while unattached competitor Stacy Caldwell won the pole vault at 6'-6” (1.98m) and unattached Kelsey Lane won the high jump at 4'-6” (1.37m).
On the men's side, Justin Baxtron (Unattached) won the 55 meter dash in 6.63, Dominique Downing (Unattached) won the 400 meters in 52.66, Kevin Selby (Unattached) ran away with the mile run in 4:51.51, and Josh Genet (Northeast Dubois Track Club) captured the 3,000 meters in 10:06.43. Josh Gambles (Unattached) won the 55 meter hurdles by just a tenth of a second over Joel Whitting (Unattached) with Gambles winning in 8.46 and Whitting second in 8.56.
Bryden Basaran (Unattached) won in a jump off over Jamal Hampton (Unattached) in the high jump with both going 6'-3.5” (1.92m) but Basaran having fewer misses. Ethan Wilkinson (Unattached) went 14'-1.25” (4.30m) to win the pole vault while Sean Krieg (Unattached) had a leap of 21'-10.25” (6.66m) to win the long jump, and Thomas Beeler (Unattached) won the shot put with a heave of 39'-11.25” (12.17m).
