BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Indiana State University women's soccer team battled both the elements and a tough Bowling Green State University team when they traveled to Bowling Green, Ohio on Friday. In a match that included a heavy downpour and an interruption due to lightning in the area, Bowling Green was able to secure a 2-1 victory over Indiana State, thanks to goals in the early minutes of each half.
The Falcons (1-1-0) jumped out quickly on Friday, posting nine total shots with five on goal during the first 18 minutes of the contest. Bowling Green found the back of the net just under five minutes into the game when Jackie Tamerlano and Kaitlyn Kobe set up Alyssa Zuccaro for the opening goal.
"In the first twenty minutes, we came out pretty flat," said head coach Erika True. "But after the lightning delay, we played much better. We ended each half very well and the team had more goal scoring opportunities tonight than we've had all year."
Indiana State (0-2-0) would fight back into the game, finishing the first half with six total shots, two on goal. The Sycamores were unable to convert a golden scoring opportunity late in the first half, when Bowling Green goalkeeper Laura Arnold was able to save a penalty kick taken by ISU sophomore Morgan Wendlandt.
Bowling Green once again started a half quickly, this time just under two minutes following the whistle to begin the second half. Zuccaro was able to find Megan Amann to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
The Sycamores fought back again, with this effort resulting in the team's first goal of the season. Connecting passes from sophomores Seyma Erenli and Jessica Rosenberg found senior Katlin Owens in the 58th minute to bring Indiana State within one goal.
Indiana State was only inches away from tying the contest in the closing minutes, but a shot off the foot of Rosenberg with two minutes remaining in the game hit the post. For the game, Indiana State totaled 16 shots, nine on goal. For the second consecutive game, sophomore Emily Lahay played the entire match in goal, making eight saves while allowing two goals.
"It's good to get the monkey off our back by scoring a goal," said head coach True. "We've improving each game. Now we'll turn our focus towards getting a win against Eastern Michigan on Sunday."
