COLUMBIA, Mo. ? The
potent Indiana State offense went silent on Tuesday night at Missouri, as the
Tigers' (18-19) pitching staff held the Sycamores (20-12) to just one run on
five hits on way to an 8-1 non-conference victory at Taylor Stadium.
ISU
starter Michael Manus, who had been out of the lineup with an injury since
March 6, returned the mound and pitched three solid innings for the
Sycamores. The lefty allowed just two
hits while walking three and striking out on Tiger hitter before exiting prior
to the fourth inning.
From
there, he gave way to reliever David Gurbach (1-1), who suffered the loss for
ISU after walking the first two batters of the fourth inning which ultimately
resulted in the first run of the game for the Tigers. Mizzou reliever Scooter Hicks (3-1) picked up
the win, after allowing one run on four hits while striking out two in 4.1
innings of work.
The game
stayed scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Tigers picked
up a run without getting a hit in the inning.
With the bases loaded and one out, ISU reliever Kevin Mann forced
Michael Liberto to hit a grounder to Ryan Strausborger at second base who
flipped to Ben Ferrell for the force out.
However, on the exchange Ferrell couldn't get the ball out of his glove
as Liberto reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Conner Mach to score from
third to make the score 1-0.
The
Tigers then tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Trevor
Coleman sent a Mann pitch into the Mizzou bullpen over the left field fence to
make the score 2-0. Mizzou kept the runs
coming, as a two out two-run double down the left field line by Greg Folgia
made the score 4-0. Later in the inning,
Folgia scored from second base to make it 5-0 on a RBI double to center field
by Coleman to cap off the three-run inning for Mizzou.
Mizzou
put three more runs on the score board in the bottom of the seventh inning to
extend its lead to 8-0, thanks to a pair of back-to-back doubles and a two-run
single by Austin Holt. That lead would
hold until the top of the ninth inning, when the Sycamores scored a run on
three straight single to bring the score to its final at 8-1.
Luke
Fieser and pinch-hitter Ben Caple singled to right field to lead off the inning
and Tyler Graham followed with a single into right center field to score Fieser
from second for the first run of the game.
With runners still on first and second with nobody out, Joe Meggs and
Ferrell both popped out before Strausborger was hit by a pitch to load the
bases for Koby Kraemer. However, Hicks
forced Kraemer to pop out to right field to end the comeback threat and the
ballgame at 8-1.
The
Sycamores and the Tigers will wrap up their brief mid-week series on Tuesday at
4 p.m. EST at Taylor Stadium.
