TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Coming
off a highly successful weekend in Florida at the Palm Beach Classic, the Indiana State baseball team returned to chilly
Sycamore Field on Tuesday to face off against in-state rival Indiana. The Sycamores (9-1) took advantage of 15 hits
and strong pitching efforts to take down the Hoosiers (3-3) by a score of 11-2
in the first of two match-ups between the two squads this season.
With the win, the
Sycamores improve to 9-1 for the first time since the 1990 season when they
started the year 13-1 under head coach Bob Warn. ISU went on to finish that season 43-21.
Freshman Cordell Greene
(1-0) took the bump for the Sycamores and picked up his first career win, as he
held the Hoosiers to just two earned runs and six hits in 3.1 innings
pitched. Senior David Gurbach shut down
the Hoosiers the rest of the way, as he struck out eight hitters and while
giving up three hits in a career-high 5.2 innings of work to close out the
game.
Indiana went down in
order in the top of the first inning, but Indiana State did not go quietly as
it put three runs on three hits on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the
inning to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Kyle
Burnam led off the game with a walk and later advanced to third base on a
one-out double by junior Nick Ciolli.
Senior Brady Shoemaker then singled through the left side of the infield
to score Burnam and give ISU a couple of base runners for Luke Fieser, who
doubled into right center field to clear the bases and pick up two RBI and get
the scoring started early.
The Hoosiers went down
in order in the top of the second inning as well against Greene and once again
the Sycamores answered with three more runs to take a 6-0 lead. With runners on first and third and one out,
junior Ryan Strausborger ripped a triple into the right center field gap to
pick up two RBI and make the score 5-0 at the time. Ciolli then reached base on a fielding error
which allowed Strausborger to score the third and final run of the inning.
Indiana picked up a run in the top of
the third inning of Greene to cut the ISU advantage to 6-1. Tyler Rogers doubled to left field to begin
the inning but was thrown out at third base trying to stretch out the play. Cody Webber then doubled off Greene and Jake
Dunning kept the doubles epidemic alive as he doubled to score Webber and cut
into the ISU lead.
Once again, ISU had the
answer as the Sycamores scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to make the
score 8-1. With two outs and nobody on
base, senior Bronco Lafrenz singled and advanced to third on a single by junior
Ben Ferrell. Burnam then walked to load
the bases for Strausborger, who reached base on an infield single that scored
Lafrenz from third and Ferrell was able to scamper home on an errant throw by Webber.
The Hoosiers knocked
Greene out of the game in the top of the fourth inning, as they scored a run on
a Kipp Schutz single and then loaded the bases with just one out. However, Gurbach came to the rescue and
struck out Webber and Jake Dunning to end the threat for the Hoosiers.
The Sycamores would then
tack on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game out
of reach at 11-2. Senior Pascual Del
Real picked up a RBI single that scored Shoemaker and later scored on a two-run
double by Lafrenz later in the inning to cap off another strong hitting
performance for the Sycamores.
Strausborger finished
the game 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored to lead the way for the
Sycamores, while Fieser and Lafrenz added two hits and two RBI apiece in the
victory for ISU. IU designated hitter
Alex Dickerson led the way for the Hoosiers with two hits, while Terre Haute native and All-American Josh
Phegley finished 1-for-4 on the day in front of a hometown crowd.
Indiana State returns to action on Wednesday,
when it travels to Clarksville, Tenn., to face off against Austin
Peay. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
