TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? The
Indiana State baseball team needed to win on
Sunday to avoid a series sweep in its first Missouri Valley Conference series
of the season. Thanks to a strong
pitching performance on the mound by Joe Rodriguez and 13 hits at the plate,
the Sycamores (13-9, 1-2 MVC) defeated the Bluejays (7-13, 2-1 MVC) to avoid
the series sweep at Sycamore Field.
Rodriguez (2-1) gave the
Sycamores just what they needed on the mound, as he allowed just three earned
runs on nine hits in seven-plus innings of work for ISU. Matt Shelton pitched two scoreless innings of
relief to finish the game, giving up just two hits and a walk while striking
out the side in the ninth inning. Creighton
starter Jonas Dufek (1-4) was shouldered with the loss, after giving up four
runs on eight hits in six innings on the mound for the Jays.
Creighton
started the game by scoring a run in the top of the first inning on a RBI
single to center field by T.J. Roemmich.
However, that runs was answered by the Sycamores in the bottom half of
the inning to tie the game at 1-1. Ryan Strausborger
led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to second base on a sacrifice
bunt by Kyle Burnam. Brady Shoemaker then singled up the middle for
a RBI as Strausborger scored from second base to tie the game.
ISU
then took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with another manufactured
run. Joe Meggs singled through the left
side to start the inning and then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt
by Pascual Del Real. Meggs then advanced
to third on a wild pitch and Strausborger followed with a walk. Burnam was up next and singled to center
field for a RBI as Meggs scored for the second run of the game.
Two
more runs crossed the plate for the Sycamores in the bottom of the fifth inning
to extend the lead to 4-1. Del Real
ripped a one-out triple into the left center field gap to start the rally and
Strausborger followed with a long home run over the left field wall, his second
home run of the season.
The
Indiana
State
offense continued to pour it on with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning to make the score 6-1. With Meggs
on third and Strausborger on first with one out, Burnam doubled down the left
field line to pick up two more RBI and extend the lead to five runs.
Those
runs would become important, as Creighton plated two runs in the top of the
eighth inning to cut the lead to 6-3. Scott
Thornburg singled to left field for the first run of the inning and Ian Dike
brought in Roemmich with a sacrifice fly to left field for the second run of
the frame.
In
the bottom half of the inning, the Sycamores answered with two runs of their
own to widen the lead to 8-3 over the Jays.
Bronco Lafrenz scored from third base on a wild pitch for the first run
of the inning and Strausborger later drove in Meggs with a RBI double to left
field to put a cap on the win for the Sycamores.
Burnam
finished the game 2-for-3 with three RBI for ISU, while Strausborger went 2-for-3
with three runs scored and two RBI in the victory for the Sycamores. Luke Fieser and Pascual Del Real also added
to hits each, while Meggs finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
The
Sycamores return to action on Wednesday, March 24, when they wrap up a
five-game homestand with a mid-week match up against Ball
State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST
at Sycamore Field.
