TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Indiana State was looking to even the series
against Creighton on Saturday at Sycamores Field and was trying to snap an
11-game losing steak to CU. However, early
errors cost the Sycamores (12-9) runs and small ball from the Bluejays (7-12)
led to 9-4 loss for ISU.
ISU starter Jake
Petricka (2-1) suffered the loss, after giving up six run but only four were
earned in six innings of work on the mound.
Petricka also struck out five Jays batters while walking three. Creighton reliever Jack VanLeur (1-1) earned
the win in relief of starter Jeremy Hauer and shut down the Sycamore offense,
as he allowed just one run on two hits in 2.2 innings on the mound.
The Jays scored a run in each of
the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead and then widened that lead to 4-0 in
the top of the third inning. Scott Thornburg
walked to lead off the inning and Ian Dike doubled to left center to score
Thornburg for the first run of the frame. Jimmy Swift then laid down a perfect sacrifice
bunt as Ian Dike advanced to third.
Petricka then struck out Robbie Knight before Elliot Soto reached on a
throwing error by Pascual Del Real, which allowed Dike to score for the fourth
run of the game
The Sycamores answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to
cut the Creighton lead to 4-3. Nick Ciolli
doubled to left field to lead off the inning and then advanced to third base on
a ground out by Brady Shoemaker. Luke Fieser
was due up next and doubled to left field to score Ciolli for the first run of
the inning and Tyler Graham doubled to right center to score Fieser. Bronco Lafrenz was next and ripped the third
consecutive double of the inning to score Graham for the third and final run of
the inning.
The score stayed that way until the top of
the seventh inning, when the Jays extended the lead to 6-3 on a two-run single
into center field off the bat of Nick Becker.
ISU answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of inning to cut
the lead to two on a Ryan Strausborger RBI double to left field that scored Joe
Meggs.
From there, it was all Creighton as the
Jays score a run in the top of the eighth inning and two more in the top of the
ninth inning to secure the 9-4 lead and their 12 consecutive win over the
Sycamores. Strausborger finished the
game 3-for-4 with the RBI double, while Fieser, Graham and Lafrenz each tallied
a hit and RBI in the game for the Sycamores.
Indiana
