TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? The
Indiana State baseball team opened Missouri
Valley Conference play at home on Friday against Creighton, which came into the
game having won 10 straight over ISU.
Unfortunately for the Sycamores (12-8, 0-1 MVC) that streak continued as
the Bluejays (6-12, 1-0 MVC) scored four runs in the seventh inning to break a
3-3 tie and held on for a 7-3 victory at Sycamore Field.
Brendon Smith (1-1)
suffered the loss for the Sycamores, after he allowed two earned runs on a hit
and a walk in relief of ISU starter Eric Valdez. Valdez battled on the mound all day and
left the game at a 3-3 tie after allowing three earned runs on six hits and
four walks in 5.1 innings of work.
Creighton reliever Bob Lackovic (1-0) picked up the win in 3.1 scoreless
innings of relief for the Jays. Lackovic
allowed no hits and struck out four batters in his time on the mound.
The Jays picked up a run
in the top of the first inning on a RBI ground out by Vicente Cafaro to take a
1-0 lead. They later extended that lead
to 2-0 in the top of the third inning on a RBI single by T.J. Roemmich and then
tacked on a run in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI double by Robbie Night
to extend their lead to 3-0.
However, the Sycamores
answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at
3-3. Luke Fieser led off the inning and
was hit by a pitch and Tyler Graham followed with a walk to give the Sycamores
a couple of base runners. Bronco Lafrenz
was up next and hit a long fly ball to right field that continued to carry in the
wind over the right field wall for a three-run home run. The home run was the fifth of the season for
Lafrenz, which leads ISU.
From there it was all
Bluejays, as the bullpen shut down the ISU offense and did not allow them to
get back into the game. Creighton
snapped the tie in the top of the seventh inning with four runs on two hits to
put the game out of reach at 7-3. Elliot
Soto struck the big blow in the inning with his two-run single to center field
off David Gurbach.
Lafrenz's three-run home
run would be the only runs of the day for the Sycamores, while four other
players each added a hit in the game.
The Sycamores and
Bluejays resume the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. EST at Sycamore Field. Jake Petricka (2-0) will take the mound for
ISU against Creighton's Jonas Dufek.
