Sycamores Avoid Series Sweep, Defeat Memphis 12-6

MILLINGTON, Tenn. ? After suffering two tough losses in the first two games of its weekend series at Memphis, the Indiana State baseball team was looking to avoid a series sweep on Sunday with a win.  The Sycamores (11-7) offense came back to life in the series finale, as they scored 12 runs on 14 hits to pick up a 12-6 win against the Tigers (8-8) at USA Stadium.

Jake Petricka (2-0) picked up his second win of the season in a strong outing, as he allowed three late runs in 6.1 innings of work while giving up nine hits and striking out four Tiger batters.  Memphis starter Brach Davis (1-2) suffered the loss for the Tigers, as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in four innings of work.

The first three innings of the game went into the book scoreless, as both starting pitchers were in control of the strike zone and allowed just a few base runners.  Petricka allowed four hits through the first three innings while Davis retired the first eight batters of the game before Koby Kraemer ruined his perfect game with a single up the middle in the third inning.

However, Indiana State broke the tie in the top of the fourth inning by scoring four runs on three hits to take a 4-0 lead.  With one out in the inning, Brady Shoemaker walked and then stole second base and Luke Fieser followed with a walk to give the Sycamores a couple of base runners.  Tyler Graham then came up and doubled into the right center field gap to score both runners and put the first two runs of the inning on the scoreboard.  Bronco Lafrenz was up next and launched a long home run over the left field wall, his fourth home run of the season and second of the series, to pick up two more RBI and make the score 4-0 in favor of ISU.

The Sycamores tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 7-0.  Pascual Del Real led off the inning with a double to right field and then scored on a RBI single by Nick Ciolli.  Ciolli then stole second and Shoemaker was hit by a pitch to give ISU two runners.  Luke Fieser then put down a well-executed sacrifice bunt to advance Ciolli and Shoemaker.  Tyler Graham then ripped a single into right field to score both runners and advanced to second base on the throw home as ISU plated its third run of the frame.

The Tigers nearly plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, but a strong relay play by the ISU defense cut down a run at the plate.  Chad Zurcher picked up a one out single and stayed at first with two outs as Trey Wiedman doubled to the wall in left field.  Zurcher rounded third and attempted to score from first base, but a strong throw from Shoemaker in left field and a perfect relay from Del Real at shortstop to Lafrenz at home ended the Memphis threat and kept the Tigers scoreless.

The offense kept coming for ISU as Kraemer led off the top of the sixth inning with his first career home run to make the score 8-0 in favor of ISU.  After a scoreless bottom half of the sixth inning for the Tigers, the Sycamores exploded for four more runs in the top of the seventh inning all off the bat of Brian Jett.  With the bases loaded and nobody out, Jett blasted a grand slam over the right field wall to make the score 12-0.

Memphis finally got to the Sycamore pitchers in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Tigers pushed five runs across the plate on four hits and two bases loaded walks.  The Tigers added one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning on a home run by Brett Bowen to left field that brought the score to its final at 12-6.

Graham finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, while Jett finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and the four RBI courtesy of the grand slam.  Lafrenz, Kraemer and Ciolli also added two hits apiece for the Sycamores on Sunday.

Indiana State returns to action at home on Wednesday, when the Sycamores welcome in-state rival Butler to Sycamore Field.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST.
