TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Indiana State women's basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 76-57 win over Central Michigan in front of 3,323 fans at Hulman Center Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Brittany Schoen had an outstanding day for the Sycamores, scoring a career-high 17 points on five 3-pointers, which matched her career best set as a freshman. Schoen also had five rebounds and four assists, as well as her second career block.
Sophomore Chelsea Buher finished with a stellar effort as well, totaling a career-high 12 points. Her performance was highlighted by a perfect 3-for-3 from long range, along with a game-leading eight rebounds and two assists in 20 minutes of work.
Sophomore Shannon Thomas matched Buher to lead the defensive corps with eight boards and was the third Sycamore to finish in double figures in scoring with 10 points. Senior Kelsey Luna added nine points and six assists.
"I think everything starts with the defense," head coach Jim Wiedie said. "I thought that our defense was outstanding. We turned the ball over a little bit early on, didn't get as many shot opportunities as we would have liked, but as the half progressed, we settled down offensively, knocked down some threes, but still continued to play good pressure defense and execute our game plan from that standpoint. It's the same old adage that your offense feeds off your defense. I think that was the case tonight."
Schoen opened the game with a pair of 3-pointers in the first four minutes, but Central Michigan came out fighting and moved out to an eight-point lead at 16-8. Thomas and freshman Moriah Hodge responded with a layup apiece, and Luna and Kelsie Cooley both dropped in a pair of free throws to contribute to ISU's exciting 20-2 run. With the rally, Indiana State took a 28-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.
ISU made quick work in the second half, with Deja Mattox hitting a jumper and Thomas with a field goal and a free throw. Mattox, Thomas and Schoen combined for the first 10 points of the second stanza, followed by a trey from Luna to go up 43-28. Buher hit back-to-back triples within one minute to extend it to 55-36.
Schoen then hit her fifth 3-point shot to surpass her career best in total points and give the Sycamores their largest lead of the game at 68-44. Freshmen Krista Smith and Taylor Whitley put the contest away with two free throws apiece in the last minute, giving the Sycamores a 76-57 final score.
Forward Kaihla Szunko led the Chippewas with 18 points and four rebounds, while guard Shonda Long notched 14 points and a team-best six boards.
Indiana State returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 1, wrapping up its three-game homestand with Detroit Mercy. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. at Hulman Center.
