DES MOINES, Iowa - The host Drake University Bulldogs tallied three second half goals to take the final game of the regular season over the visiting Indiana State University women's soccer team on Friday night at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Sycamores and Bulldogs played to a scoreless draw in the first half, with the teams battling the elements just as much as their opposition. In a game that was played in a heavy downpour, Indiana State was able to muster five shots with two on goal, while Drake took four shots with one on goal.
Drake opened the scoring in the 59th minute of the second half on a goal by Crystal Townley and would extend their lead to two goals in the 75th minute off the foot of Blair Nelson. Townley would score her second in the 83rd minute for the final goal of the game.
For the game, Indiana State took eight shots with three on goal. Sophomore Taylor Nelson started the game in goal for the Sycamores and played just under 70 minutes while making two saves. Sophomore Emily Lahay entered in the 70th minute and made two saves over the final 20 minutes of the game.
With the loss, Indiana State ends the regular season with a 5-9-3 record and 2-3-1 in conference play. Drake moves to 8-8-3 overall and 3-3 in MVC play.
Looking ahead to the MVC Tournament, Illinois State and Missouri State earned the opening round byes, with the Redbirds winning the conference after a 5-1 regular season. Indiana State earned the #5 seed and will remain in Des Moines to take on #4 Drake. Creighton earned the #3 seed and will host #6 Evansville. Indiana State and Drake will play on Sunday, Nov. 1, with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m. ET.
