TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - A second half goal from sophomore defender Laura Terry, along with steady defensive play, was all the Indiana State University women's soccer team needed to secure a 2-1 victory over the visiting University of Evansville Purple Aces on Wednesday night in front of 103 fans at Memorial Stadium.

"I thought we played a very good soccer game tonight," said head coach Erika True.  "We've shown bits and pieces of this throughout the year, but tonight we put it together for close to 90 minutes."

Senior Katlin Owens opened up the scoring in the match just over three minutes into the contest.  After the ball was sent towards the Evansville penalty box, Owens gained control of the ball and rocketed a shot into the top-right corner of the goal.  The goal was Owens' fourth this season, tying her with fellow senior Erin Bianchi for the team lead.

"I saw the ball pop out, saw the back post open and hit it," said Owens.  "It felt good to get the win and it's just another step towards getting into the [Missouri Valley Conference] tournament."

Evansville would knot the score halfway through the first half on Kristen Davis' fifth goal of the season.  Evansville and Indiana State entered the halftime break tied at one each.

The Sycamores came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, controlling possession for much of the period.  Terry scored the eventual game-winner just five minutes into the half for her first goal of her career with the Sycamores.  Terry gained possession of the ball in Indiana State's defensive half of the field and charged through the Purple Aces' defense.  Terry fired a shot from 25 yards out that would slip just under the crossbar to put the Sycamores up 2-1.

"I didn't think it was going in when I hit it, so I was really surprised and happy when it did," said Terry.  "We won tonight as a team and I know we'll bring this kind of effort in our next match."

Sophomore Taylor Nelson got the starting nod in goal for Indiana State and improved her record in goal this season to 2-2-1.  Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal for the Sycamores, making three saves.

With the win, Indiana State improves to 4-8-2 overall and 1-2 in MVC play.  Evansville falls to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in conference action.  Indiana State is now 4-1-1 all-time against the Purple Aces in Terre Haute.

For the game, Indiana State limited the Evansville offense to only six shots with four on goal.  Indiana State was able to attempt 18 shots with eight being on goal.  Indiana State out-shot its opponent for just the second time this season, the first coming during the Sept. 27 game against UMKC.

Indiana State will hit the road for its next contest, when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa, to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 17.  The game is set to kickoff at 3:00 p.m. ET.
