Terre Haute, Ind. ? The visiting Valparaiso Crusaders (4-1-0) came to the ISU Soccer Complex this Sunday afternoon and brought with them momentum from their 1-0 double-overtime victory against IUPUI on Friday to help them defeat the Indiana State Sycamores (1-4-0) 2-1 in non-conference soccer action.
The Crusaders Jackie Kondratko scored her third goal of the season at the 15-minute mark unassisted from the top of the 18-yard box. Kondratko now leads the Crusaders with six points. The visiting team's second goal came off of a free kick about 25 yards out near the left sideline. Dana McGlone took the kick which Laura Romberg got a head on that went off the crossbar. Jessie White was in perfect position as the ball came directly to her and she tapped it in to give her team a 2-0 lead with less than 30 minutes to go in the game.
The Sycamores would get on the scoreboard at the 72-minute mark to pull within one off an Alison Gasparovich shot from the right flank. Amanda Gogel crossed the ball to Gasparovich from the opposite side. Gasparovich's shot deflected off a Valparaiso defender which redirected the ball into the net, giving the freshman midfielder her first collegiate goal.
Unfortunately the Sycamores were not able to capitalize on any further opportunities as they dropped the match 2-1 to the Crusaders.
Mele Cabral was in goal for the visitors. She saved three shots in 90 minutes of work.
Emily Lahay, the freshman goalkeeper from Sullivan, Ind., tallied eight saves in 90 minutes of action as well. Three of her saves were crowd-stunners as Lahay made three diving stops to prevent the Crusaders from scoring a third goal.
The Sycamores will travel a short distance to Purdue University to take part in the Boilermaker Challenge. Friday, September 12, the Sycamores will play Morehead State at 5:30 p.m. and then round out the Challenge on Sunday, facing Rhode Island at 1:00 p.m.
The team will return to the ISU Soccer Complex on September 19 at 5:00 p.m. when they host Eastern Michigan.
