TERRE HAUTE, IN ?. The Wichita State Shockers used the long ball to defeat the Indiana State Sycamores 11-2 in the regularly scheduled game Saturday at Sycamore Field.
Indiana State (12-26 overall and 5-9 in the MVC) and Wichita State (33-8 overall and 11-3 in the Valley) will play one more game in the series, that schedule for 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Sycamore Field.
It will be Senior Citizens Day at Sycamore Field with anyone age 65 and older admitted free into the ballpark.
Indiana State took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Gary King led off with a single to right and then scored on a towering home run by Chris Schmidt over the left field fence.
That was all the offense for the Sycamores as the Shockers Aaron Shafer shut down Indiana State after the first inning.
Wichita State came back with a single run in the second and then rocked the Sycamores with six in the fourth on three home runs, a triple and a single. Three more came across in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Chris Schmidt finished with a home run, his fourth of the season, and a single while David Brumagin had two singles, and Gary King, Ryan Strausborger, Nick Ciolli, Brian Ramirez, and Pascual Del Real had a single each.
Matt Shelton (3-4) started on the mound for Indiana State and went 5.2 innings before giving way to Clay Kovac in the sixth. Shelton gave up 10 runs, only five of them earned, on 10 hits. Kovac allowed a run on one hit.
Aaron Shafer (7-2) got the win for Wichita State, going eight innings and allowing two runs on nine hits. Justin Kemp worked the ninth and set the Sycamores down in order.
