TERRE HAUTE, IND. ? After a two week break, the Indiana State women's golf team will swing back into action this weekend as they participate in the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships at the Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. The tournament is hosted by the University of Tennessee.
“We are really looking forward to competing this weekend in the Mercedes-Benz,” Mike Whitson, Indiana State golf coach said. “This tournament has long been regarded as one of the most prestigious in the country and getting an invitation is a compliment to our team and our golf program.”
The 6,058 yard, par-72 course at Fox Den was opened in 1968 and is considered one of the toughest courses in the state of Tennessee. Fox Den is a course that requires finesse as well as long-ball power with bent grass, multi-tiered greens and narrow, tree-lined, well-bunkered fairways.
Some of the top collegiate programs will be participating in the event including Denver (ranked ninth), Louisville (19th), Texas A&M (24th), and Arkansas (25th).
Also competing will be North Carolina State, LSU, Tennessee, Kent State, Kentucky, Chattanooga, Tulane, Central Florida, North Carolina, Furman, South Carolina, Mississippi, SMU along with Indiana State.
The Sycamores are paired with Mississippi and SMU in the final pairing to start at 10:39 a.m., going off of the 10th hole in the first round on Friday. The tournament will conclude with 18 holes on Saturday and another 18 holes on Sunday.
Breanne Smith will lead the Sycamores into the tournament. The Sycamore junior finished in a tie for fourth at the Cardinal Classic two weeks ago after tying for ninth in the season opening tournament at the University of Michigan in the season opening tournament. Smith is averaging 74.3 per round with a low round of 72 recorded at the Cardinal Classic.
Kayley Bodine is second on the team with a 76.0 average after two tournaments. The junior tied for eighth at the Cardinal Classic. Kelsea Ice is third on the team with an average of 78.7 with Diana Price currently at 81.0 and Mackenzie Mack at 85.0.
