AMES, Iowa ? It was another record setting day for the Indiana State University track and field team at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday with two more school records being established.
Sean Bowman, a junior from Nashville, Ind., and Jordan Fife, a senior from Seymour, Ind., both set new school records for the men's track team in Saturday's competition. On Friday, Erica Moore, a freshman from Sullivan, Ind., and Kylie Hutson, a freshman from Terre Haute, Ind., set new school records for the women's track team
Bowman set a new school record in the one mile run, placing seventh in the meet in a time of 4:06.33. That broke the school record set just last week by Fife at the Hoosier Classic. Fife, though, was not to be outdone, and set a new school record in the 3000 meters, placing third overall in the event with a time of 8:08.74. That broke the record set by Fife two years ago.
Moore was third overall and the second collegian in the women's pentathlon with a point total of 3,674 points. The old mark has stood for 25 years. It was set by Chris Singer in 1982 at 3,541 points. Dana Sander finished in 12th with 2,840 points.
Hutson won the pole vault competition with a new school record vault of 13-feet-5 1/4 inches (4.10 meters). The old record was 13-feet-3 1/2 set by Ullenbruch in 2005.
The Indiana State men's team also did well in the triple jump where the Sycamores took the third, fourth and fifth spots in the competition. Corey Dowden, a senior from Mt. Vernon, Ill., finished third with a leap of 50-feet-5? inches, Steve Daniel, a senior from Decatur, Ill., finished fourth with a leap of 50-feet-2?, and Paladin Jordan, a senior from Des Plaines, Ill., was fifth with a leap of 50-feet-0?.
Also for the men's team, Brandon Youngdale, a freshman from Kokomo, Ind., finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of 6-feet-9?.
On Friday, Justin Kunz was 11th in the 5000 meters (14:42.41) and Scott Keeney 18th (14:52.77). Both runners moved up in the top ten all-time for that event. In the Men's Heptathlon, Anthony Bertoli finished eighth overall with 4,776 points while Carlton Hoyles was 10th at 4,655.
For the women's team Saturday, Dani Prince, a senior from Bloomington, Ind., won her heat and finished 10th overall in the 3000 meters with a time of 9:54.67. That is the fastest in the Missouri Valley Conference this season anthe fifth fastest in school history. Laura Engle, a senior from Terre Haute, Ind., was 15th overall in the event with a time of 10:00.57.
The ISU 4x400 relay team of Mary Kate Conway (Saint John, Ind., sophomore), Lauren Martin (Hoffman Estates, Ill., freshman), Myra Bess (Middletown, Ind., senior), and Moore finished 16th overall in 3:51.07. Santia Spight, a senior from Indianapolis, was 19th overall in the high jump with a leap of 5-feet-5? .
“The competition was very stiff,” women's high coach John Gartland said. “There were a lot of Big 10 and Big 12 teams.”
Indiana State will be back in Bloomington, Ind., next weekend for the Hoosier Hills Open. That meet is the final meet before the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships which will be held Feb. 23-24 at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.
