Entering his tenth year as Director of Strength and Conditioning, David McMannus is a proud alumnus that jumped at the opportunity to come back to Indiana State University and take over the physical development of the athletics program. McMannus oversees the design and implementation of the strength and conditioning as well as the performance nutrition of 16 teams and over 350 student athletes.
Since taking over the program, ISU Athletics have had very successful results. The program boasts a number of Missouri Valley Conference Champions, All-Americans, National Champions, Professional Athletes (NFL, MLB, Nike) and even multiple Olympians including two in this last year’s Rio Summer Games. Of equal importance, the injuries per sport have also greatly reduced.
McMannus is a member and certified coach of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association. McMannus is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA and he also holds a certification and membership with USAW.
Before taking over as Director of the Sycamore Strength & Conditioning program, McMannus accomplished two professional NFL Internships with the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts under the tutelage of Rusty Jones and Jon Torine, respectively.
McMannus attended ISU where he played football and earned his bachelor's in exercise science. He continued to work with Sycamore athletics and earned his master’s of science. A part-time lecturer and Martial Arts Instructor at Indiana State University.
John Stein

John Stein has served as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach since 2015. Stein, currently is in charge of designing and implementing all the strength and conditioning programs for Sycamore baseball and women’s basketball as well as assisting with the football’s strength and conditioning efforts, supervising graduate assistants and serving as an adjunct instructor in the Kinesiology, Recreation & Sport Departments.
Throughout his tenure coach Stein has worked with women’s Soccer, track & field, & coordinated the athletic department’s internship program.
Stein spent two semesters interning with the Indiana State Strength and Conditioning program working with nearly all of the men’s and women’s programs. After interning with Indiana State, Stein worked in the private sector in Detroit working with adolescent, collegiate athletes, professional boxers, as well as NHL and MLB athletes before returning to Terre Haute on a full-time basis.
From 2009 to 2014 Stein earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in exercise physiology from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. While in school he co-founded the Ohio University Weightlifting Club, volunteered time with the Ohio University Strength and Conditioning program, as well as tutoring students and assisting in the instruction of exercise physiology coursework.
