TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A $2.3 million investment in the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course is underway as Terre Haute prepares to host the 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships and the 2027 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
The project includes $1.9 million in building, site, and landscape enhancements and a $348,000 irrigation expansion, strengthening the course's position as one of the nation's premier cross country venues and reinforcing Terre Haute's identity as "Cross Country Town USA."
The investment comes as cross country remains one of Indiana's most significant tourism drivers. The course attracts nearly 100,000 annual visitors and generates approximately 9,110 hotel room nights in Vigo County annually, with additional hotel demand extending across West Central Indiana during major championship weekends.
Seven signature weekends at the facility generated $10 million in annual local economic impact in 2025 through lodging, dining, retail, and visitor spending.
The 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships are projected to generate between $2.5 million and $3 million in economic impact, while the 2027 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships are projected to generate approximately $1.2 million.
"These investments represent far more than facility improvements — they reinforce Terre Haute's position as Cross Country Town USA," said Karen Dyer. "Cross country is the backbone of our tourism economy here in Vigo County. Outside of large, one-time events like the Terre Haute Air Show, it consistently drives the highest volume of visitors and economic impact year after year."
Site work began this spring as part of a long-term campus investment. Construction is being led by engineer Michael Waldbeiser and Keymark Development Inc., with landscape architecture and master planning provided by Lowland Workshop and civil engineering by Fishbeck. Project completion is scheduled for the first of August 2026.
Located adjacent to the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center and operated by the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau, the course is central to Vigo County's sports tourism economy.
"These investments are essential to maintaining competitiveness at the highest level of collegiate athletics," Dyer said. "When you consider that Vigo County benefits from more than $300 million in annual tourism impact—and that 80 to 85 percent is driven by sports tourism—you understand the scale of what this facility represents for our region's long-term economic vitality."

Major Facility and Site Enhancements
At the center of the project is a new expanded restroom and concession facility designed to serve championship crowds of 5,000 to 10,000. The plan also modernizes circulation and race-day functionality through new walkways, a roundabout entrance, and a large fire pit gathering area for athletes and spectators. Work is scheduled to be completed by August 1, 2026.
Repairs to the existing facility—including tuckpointing, sidewalk improvements, and upgraded water service—were completed last fall. A new barn was also constructed to improve operations and event logistics.
The project also includes a significant irrigation expansion across the course to ensure consistent, championship-level turf conditions throughout the year.
- Enhanced Arrival and Identity
- The master plan developed by Lowland Workshop redefines the arrival experience into the venue with a redesigned entrance and roundabout system that improves circulation and establishes a clear gateway into the course.
- At its center will be a six-foot-by-six-foot sculptural running shoe serving as a public art landmark. The installation is part of Art of the Run, a community art-and-sport initiative leading into the 2026 championships.
- Local artists, led by Becky Hochhalter, are designing fiberglass shoe sculptures throughout the community to reinforce Terre Haute's identity as Cross Country Town USA.
- Expanded Gathering and Tailgating Experience
- The project enhances spectator engagement through expanded gathering areas, improved viewing zones, and a large fire pit space designed for athletes, families, and fans during championship weekends.
- These improvements balance elite championship infrastructure and historical elements of the course with continued usability for local and regional meets throughout the year.
- Enhanced Landscape and Visitor Experience
- The landscape plan improves walkability, greenspace connectivity, and overall site circulation while strengthening visual cohesion across the campus. The result is a more accessible and immersive environment for athletes and spectators alike.
2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships – Host City Experience
Terre Haute will serve as host city for the 2026 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on November 21, 2026, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. Championship week will include preliminary races, athlete programming, and supporting events leading into race day. Runners from across the country will have a chance to try out the course during the Under Armor Pre-National Invitational October 16.
Jeff Martin, Indiana State University Associate Head Coach and LaVern Gibson Operations Director, highlighted the course's national significance and continued partnership with the NCAA.
"We're fortunate to be able to bring events of this magnitude to Vigo County," Martin said. "With Indiana State University serving as the host institution and our continued partnership with the NCAA—which has entrusted LaVern Gibson with hosting championship events across multiple divisions for more than two decades—it's an honor to continue welcoming athletes from across the United States to Terre Haute. For years, runners have competed on what many consider one of the premier cross country courses in the nation. These improvements help ensure that athletes, coaches, and fans will continue to experience a championship-caliber venue for years to come."
In partnership with Indiana State University and the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau, Terre Haute is launching a coordinated host city experience designed to extend the championship beyond the course. The initiative activates downtown with fan engagement, community programming, and visitor experiences that showcase the city's identity as Cross Country Town USA.
