Indiana State heads to Valparaiso to continue 2026 MVC play

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State heads to Valparaiso, Ind. and Emory G. Bauer Field for a Missouri Valley weekend series against the Valparaiso Beacons running over March 28-30. All three games will feature a 2 p.m. ET first pitch and will be carried live on 105.5 The Legend while Monday's contest will be streamed via ESPN+.
 
The series adjusted due to an expected cold front due to impact the Midwest this weekend as the teams adjusted the weekend from a Friday-Sunday format to the Saturday-Monday.
 
Recapping The Midweek
  • Indiana State claimed the midweek win over Indiana this past Tuesday night as the Sycamores went into Bart Kaufman Field and came away with the 5-4 win over the Hoosiers.
  • The Indiana State win marked the Sycamores' second consecutive win over IU in Bloomington and first since Indiana topped the Hoosiers in three consecutive wins in the 2015, 2016, and 2017 seasons.
  • The Sycamores improved to 4-1 against the Big Ten in the 2026 season following their win over the Hoosiers as Indiana State has recorded over Penn State, Illinois, and Indiana to date this season.
  • Indiana State trailed 3-2 heading into the eighth inning before the Sycamores rallied back with a three-run frame to take the lead.
  • Jorge Cartagena connected on an RBI double to tie the game up, before Mason Roell scored on a wild pitch to put the Sycamores in the lead. Colin Sander followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Cartagena to put Indiana State head 5-3.
  • IU rallied for a run in the bottom of the ninth before Jack Armstrong retired the final two outs of the inning to secure the 5-4 win.
  • Hunter Small worked 2.1 innings with four strikeouts late in the game in recording his first win at Indiana State.
  • Andrew Ortiz recorded three of the Sycamores' seven hits in the win, while Carter Beck added two singles and an RBI.
  • Overall, Indiana State utilized nine different pitchers on the mound in a designated staff day in the bullpen with Spencer Johnsen, Colby Morse, Owen Roberts, Breyllin Suriel, Brady Banker, Trevor Fenters, and Jaxon Sparks joining Hunter Small and Jack Armstrong on the mound. 
Season Spotlight
  • Carter Beck has come alive with the start of Missouri Valley play as the junior outfielder leads the team with a .327 batting average, 32 hits, and eight doubles, while adding four home runs and 20 RBIs.
  • Mason Roell (.351) and Andrew Ortiz (.309) have both seen their batting average go above the .300 mark on the year over the last few weeks.
  • Mason Roell has posted five extra-base hits over his 13 hits on the season, while adding a team-high .538 on-base percentage and .622 slugging percentage.
  • Andrew Ortiz has posted back-to-back three hit games while adding four doubles, 12 walks, and a .441 on-base percentage while taking over the leadoff role in the lineup.
  • Caden Miller (.294) has been among the team's hitting leaders on the year while doubling up at both catcher and first base. He's added seven doubles and three home runs while driving in 22 RBIs.
  • Nick Sutherlin (.284) and Emil Estrella (.272) have been the team's power bats in the middle of the lineup with Sutherlin posting six doubles and four home runs, while Estrella has recorded a team-high 14 extra-base hits with six homers, a team-high 27 RBIs, and 21 runs scored.
  • Indiana State remains the Missouri Valley doubles leader on the year with 54 on the season (27th in the NCAA), while averaging 2.25 doubles per game (29th in the NCAA). The Sycamores have hit at least one double in 22 of the 24 games heading into the weekend.
  • Carter Beck and Emil Estrella have both started all 24 games in the 2026 season for the Sycamores, while Caden Miller and Nick Sutherlin have also played in all 24 contests on the year.
  • Indiana State's pitching efforts have led to a 6.64 team ERA over 212.2 innings pitched on the year.
  • The Sycamores have posted a 192:119 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year while allowing opponents to a .276 batting average.

  • Hunter Small has also been among the NCAA leaders on the season in pitching appearances sitting sixth in the NCAA while leading the Valley with 14.
  • Jacob Spencer (0-2, 2.57 ERA), Colby Morse (2-0, 4.50 ERA), Ryan Karst (0-1, 5.93 ERA), and Owen Roberts (0-1, 6.35 ERA) have been among the team's pitching leaders out of the bullpen this year with all expected to be in the mix on the mound this weekend.
  • Carson Seeman (1-0, 7.62 ERA) is coming off a strong week where he posted 5.1 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts against both Illinois and Bradley. 
Sycamores in Valley Play
  • Andrew Ortiz (.545) and Nick Sutherlin (.545) were both standouts on the plate this past weekend at the start of Valley play as the Sycamore duo both tied for the team lead with six hits apiece.
  • Andrew Ortiz and Caden Miller both recorded two doubles over the weekend, while Emil Estrella homered twice.
  • Carter Beck, Colin Sander, and Jorge Cartagena also homered against Bradley this past weekend in Terre Haute.
  • Carter Beck (.500) went 6-for-12 on the weekend with a .625 on-base percentage and a .750 slugging percentage.
  • Colin Sander hit .429 with a double, triple, and home run while driving in five RBIs.
  • Nomar Garcia added a .556 batting average over two games while tying for the team lead with two stolen bases.
  • Indiana State posted a 5.33 team ERA over the 27.0 innings against Bradley with the Sycamores posting a 23:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
  • Carson Seeman, Colby Morse, and Jacob Spencer all recorded 0.00 ERAs over the weekend, while Ty Brooks posted a 1.29 ERA over a team-high 7.0 innings in the Saturday start.
Sycamores Against Valparaiso
  • Indiana State holds the 61-30-1 all-time edge over Valparaiso over the course of their respective program histories.
  • The Sycamores and the Beacons first lined up back on April 17, 1948, with the Beacons claiming the 5-3 win.
  • Indiana State seized control of the series from 2007-2024 with the Sycamores winning 24 consecutive contests against Valparaiso during the stretch.
  • Valparaiso broke the streak last season on March 21, 2025, with an 8-3 win in the series opener at Bob Warn Field, before the Sycamores responded to claim the final two wins to secure the series.
  • Indiana State has won 13 consecutive games in Valparaiso dating back to the 1972 season including series sweeps over the Beacons in 2018, 2022, and 2024 since Valpo joined the MVC as full members. 
About the Valparaiso
  • Valparaiso was not listed among the top five teams announced in the Missouri Valley Baseball preseason poll.
  • The Beacons put five players on the conference's preseason watch list with Spencer Boynton (RHP), Adam Guazzo (RHP), Connor Lockwood (RHP), Eli Riley (C), and Case Sullivan (INF) all receiving recognition.
  • Valparaiso enters the weekend series with a 6-14 overall record, 0-3 mark in Missouri Valley play following this past weekend against Murray State.
  • The Beacons are in the midst of a recent skid falling in nine of their last 10 games dating back to March 6 against Jacksonville State.
  • Valparaiso picked up their last win on March 15 at SIUE as the Beacons claimed the series finale victory over the Cougars, 13-9, in Edwardsville.

Indiana State Baseball Season Tickets on Sale Now
Season tickets for the 2026 Indiana State baseball season are now on sale as the Sycamores head into their second season under Head Coach Tracy Archuleta. The Sycamores will play 21 home games inside Bob Warn Field this season, starting on March 4 against Lindenwood.
 
Reserved chairback season tickets can be purchased for $110. General admission season tickets will go on sale as well with adult ($75), seniors ($55), and youth ($40) tickets also being available for purchase. There will be a $5 surcharge added to those wanting tickets printed.
 
The Sycamores have teamed up with Pacesetter Sports and the Spirit Shop for the third consecutive season for a season ticket deal. Fans will receive a $50 Pacesetter gift card for each $110 reserved chairback season ticket, $35 gift card for each $75 general admission season ticket, $25 gift card for each $55 senior general admission ticket, and $20 gift card for each $40 youth season ticket sold.
