Sycamores take control of game early, Brooks shuts down Braves to even weekend series

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State scored early and often as the lineup produced in support of another strong pitching effort from Ty Brooks as the Sycamores took the Saturday 8-3 win to even the Missouri Valley series against Bradley at Bob Warn Field.
 
The Sycamores (9-13, 1-1) rallied back from an early 1-0 deficit with a complete offensive effort as six different Indiana State players drove in runs, seven different players recorded hits, and six players scored in the contest.
 
Indiana State steadily added to the lead throughout the contest after Andrew Ortiz's RBI double off the wall in left center in the bottom of the second inning tied the game up against Bradley (5-17, 1-1) starting pitcher Calen Scheider (0-3). Caden Miller (RBI double) and Jorge Cartagena (RBI single) drove in runs in the fourth and fifth innings, before the Sycamores broke the game open in the sixth.
 
The Sycamores loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning as Andrew Ortiz drew a walk, Colin Sander doubled down the right field line, and Ray Jesse drew a walk from Bradley reliever Brady Appel. Nomar Garcia followed with a two-run single up the middle with Sander sliding home ahead of the throw from the Bradley shortstop to make it a 5-1 Indiana State lead.
 
Indiana State loaded the bases again in the bottom of the seventh as Caden Miller singled, Nick Sutherlin was hit by a pitch, and Andrew Ortiz was walked, bringing Colin Sander to the plate. The freshman infielder delivered with a two-run single through the right side of the infield scoring Miller and Sutherlin to stretch the lead to 7-1. Ray Jesse followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field scoring Ortiz to make it an 8-1 lead.
 
Meanwhile, Indiana State starter Ty Brooks (4-0) bounced back from a tough first inning to shut down the Braves' offense on Saturday afternoon. Brooks pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third inning and utilized strong defensive play from shortstop Nomar Garcia on his way in his third quality start of the season. The Milford, Ind. native went 7.0 innings allowing four hits and a run while striking out five in his fourth win of 2026.
 
Trevor Fenters went the final 2.0 innings in relief surrendering two late Bradley runs, while getting a key double play in the top of the ninth inning to close out the Indiana State win.
 
Nomar Garcia led the Sycamores at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, driving in two RBIs and scoring a run while stealing a base. The bottom half of the Indiana State lineup delivered with a combined six hits, six RBIs, and four runs scored as Andrew Ortiz (1-for-2, two runs, two walks), Colin Sander (2-for-4, two RBIs, a double, stolen base), and Ray Jesse (0-for-2, RBI) all contributing in key situations for Indiana State.

Jaxon Schumacher homered and Landon Lowe added an RBI double to lead the Bradley offense in the game. Luke Skinner and Lowe both finished with multi-hit games.
 
Calen Scheider took the loss on the mound allowing four hits and two runs over 3.1 innings in the start. Ryan Schaffnit worked 2.0 innings, while Brady Appel and Drew Politte closed out the game on the mound.
 
How They Scored
  • Luke Skinner's infield single put Bradley on the board in the top of the first inning with Michael Quick coming around to score as the Braves went up 1-0 early.
  • Andrew Ortiz evened the game up in the bottom of the second as the sophomore outfielder connected on an RBI double off the wall in center field scoring Nick Sutherlin to make it a 1-1 game.
  • Caden Miller put Indiana State ahead in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double off the wall in left center scoring Carter Beck to put the Sycamores ahead 2-1.
  • Indiana State added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning as Jorge Cartagena connected on an RBI single to left field bringing home Nomar Garcia to make it a 3-1 lead.
  • The Sycamores loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth and Nomar Garcia made it count with a two-run single up the middle with Andrew Ortiz and Colin Sander both scoring on the play to put Indiana State ahead 5-1.
  • Indiana State loaded the bases again in the bottom of the seventh with Colin Sander providing the key hit in the frame with a two-run single through the right side scoring Nick Sutherlin and Caden Miller. Ray Jesse added a sacrifice fly to center field bringing home Andrew Ortiz to make it an 8-1 Sycamore lead.
  • Bradley was back in the scoring column in the top of the eighth on Landon Lowe's RBI double off the wall in left center scoring Luke Skinner to cut the deficit down to 8-2.
  • Bradley catcher Jaxon Schumacher added a solo home run over the left field wall in the top of the ninth inning to provide the final 8-3 scoring margin. 
News and Notes
  • Ty Brooks recorded his team-leading fourth win of the 2026 season on Saturday afternoon as the sophomore ace worked 7.0 innings against the Braves.
  • The 7.0 innings pitched marked his third game of at least 7.0 innings in the 2026 season and the fifth consecutive game he has pitched at least five innings.
  • Brooks recorded five strikeouts in the contest marking his third game with at least five strikeouts on the year.
  • Brooks allowed just one run on four hits on the mound marking his fourth game of the season allowing two or fewer runs and sixth game allowing four or fewer hits.
  • Nomar Garcia connected on three hits on Saturday afternoon marking his first three-hit game of 2026 and second multi-hit game of the season. His last game with at least three hits came on April 8, 2025, at Purdue.
  • Colin Sander continued to produce at the plate as the freshman infielder recorded his second consecutive multi-hit game, while adding his first collegiate double in the Sycamore Blue & White.
  • Sander added his first multi-RBI contest driving in two runs with his RBI single in the seventh inning.
  • Carter Beck, Caden Miller, Colin Sander, and Nomar Garcia all recorded multi-hit games on Saturday afternoon.
  • Colin Sander added his first collegiate stolen base on Saturday afternoon, while Nomar Garcia recorded his second of the 2026 season.
  • Trevor Fenters worked a career-high 2.0 innings in relief to close out the win.

Indiana State Baseball Season Tickets on Sale Now
Season tickets for the 2026 Indiana State baseball season are now on sale as the Sycamores head into their second season under Head Coach Tracy Archuleta. The Sycamores will play 21 home games inside Bob Warn Field this season, starting on March 4 against Lindenwood.
 
Reserved chairback season tickets can be purchased for $110. General admission season tickets will go on sale as well with adult ($75), seniors ($55), and youth ($40) tickets also being available for purchase. There will be a $5 surcharge added to those wanting tickets printed.
 
The Sycamores have teamed up with Pacesetter Sports and the Spirit Shop for the third consecutive season for a season ticket deal. Fans will receive a $50 Pacesetter gift card for each $110 reserved chairback season ticket, $35 gift card for each $75 general admission season ticket, $25 gift card for each $55 senior general admission ticket, and $20 gift card for each $40 youth season ticket sold.
