Sycamores Secure Back-to-Back Victories Over Green Bay and Western Illinois

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Indiana State closed out play at the Lindenwood Tournament with a pair of victories Saturday, defeating Green Bay, 3-1, before rolling past Western Illinois, 10-0, in five innings.

The Sycamores jumped on Green Bay early and never relinquished the lead in a controlled 3-1 win.

Indiana State struck in the bottom of the first as Morgan Goodrich drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and moved third on a single by Madison Poulson. After Poulson swiped second, Mallory Chavez delivered a two-RBI double down the left field line to give ISU a 2-0 advantage. Hannah Welch followed with an RBI double through the right side, pushing the lead to 3-0 before the Phoenix could record the final out of the inning.

Green Bay answered with a solo home run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Sycamore pitching staff held firm the rest of the way. Green Bay threatened in the sixth with three singles to load the bases, but Indiana State worked out of the jam to preserve the two-run cushion.

Caylee Gaytan handled the start in the circle before Megan Asher entered in the seventh and retired the side in order to secure the win.

Indiana State's offense exploded in the second and third innings to power a run-rule victory over Western Illinois.

After stranding three runners in the first, the Sycamores broke through in the second. Bri Marx walked and later scored on Morgan Goodrich's two-RBI triple to left center. Madison Poulson followed with an RBI single, and Chavez capped the inning with an RBI double to give ISU a 4-0 lead.

The Sycamores poured it on in the third. An unearned run scored on a sacrifice fly before Chavez delivered a two-RBI triple to right center. Welch added an RBI single as Indiana State capitalized on Western Illinois miscues to stretch the lead to 9-0.

ISU added one more in the fourth on an RBI groundout from Lauren Marsicek to make it 10-0.

Indiana State pitching combined for a five-inning shutout, allowing just two hits while striking out multiple Leathernecks. The Sycamores retired the final nine batters they faced to secure the run-rule win.
