Indiana State Splits Day One at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Indiana State split its opening day at the Lindenwood Tournament, falling 5-2 to Green Bay before responding with a 4-1 victory over host Lindenwood on Friday.

Green Bay used a big first inning to create early separation, plating four runs in the bottom of the first. A walk and a Sycamore error set the table before a grand slam to center field gave the Phoenix a 4-0 lead.

The Sycamores settled in defensively after the opening frame and kept Green Bay off the board until the fourth, when an RBI double pushed the lead to 5-0.

Indiana State broke through in the fifth. Brailey Mills singled to start the inning and later scored after Lauren Marsicek reached on an error, cutting the deficit to 5-1. ISU added another run in the sixth when Mallory Chavez walked and eventually came home on Addie Burns' RBI groundout, but the Sycamores were unable to draw closer.

Megan Asher provided steady relief work in the circle, holding Green Bay scoreless over the final two innings.

Indiana State bounced back in the nightcap, using timely hitting and a strong seventh inning to secure a 4-1 win over the Lions.

The Sycamores struck first in the second inning. Hannah Welch singled, and Brailey Mills reached after being hit by a pitch before Annie Waggoner delivered an RBI single up the middle to give ISU a 1-0 lead.

Lindenwood answered in the third with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1, and the contest remained deadlocked into the seventh.

Indiana State broke through in the top of the seventh. Emi Jeras and Ireland Riley opened the inning with singles, and after a walk loaded the bases, Morgan Goodrich delivered a clutch two-RBI single to left to put the Sycamores ahead 3-1. Claire Connelly followed with an RBI single up the middle to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Sycamore defense closed the door in the bottom half of the inning, retiring the Lions in order to seal the victory.
