Big bats, strong pitching lead Sycamores past Miami (Ohio) in Snowbird Classic opener

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Indiana State offense exploded with 11 runs over the first three innings and Jack Armstrong worked 5.0 scoreless frames out of the bullpen as the Sycamores topped Miami (Ohio), 11-3, on the opening day of the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
 
The Sycamores (2-3) took control of the contest in a decisive seven-run second inning as Indiana State sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame. Carter Beck provided the big blow with a one-out grand slam over the right field wall scoring Jeremy Martinez, Caleb Niehaus, and Nomar Garcia to give Indiana State the 5-3 lead over the RedHawks (4-1).
 
Three batters later, Caden Miller connected on a two-run triple down the left field line with the ball rolling into the Miami bullpen allowing Emil Estrella and Nick Sutherlin to score. Eddie Alonso followed with an RBI single plating Miller to make it an 8-3 Sycamore lead.
 
The Sycamores provided the final insurance in the bottom of the third inning as Nick Sutherlin connected on an RBI double down the left field lien and Miller drove in two more runs on a single through the left side to stake the Indiana State bullpen to the 11-3 lead.
 
Jack Armstrong (1-0) entered in the top of the third inning and promptly shut down the Miami offense on the afternoon as the senior right-hander kept the RedHawks off-balance at the plate. Armstrong needed just 78 pitches to make it through 5.0 complete innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six to settle the game down. Carson Seeman worked the final two scoreless frames with four strikeouts to close out the contest.
 
Carter Beck, Emil Estrella, Caden Miller, Jeremy Martinez, and Nomar Garcia all recorded multi-hit games as the Sycamores rapped up 13 hits on Friday night. Beck doubled in addition to his grand slam and drove in a career-high five RBI, while Miller brought home four with his first triple as a Sycamore. Sutherlin and Martinez both doubled.
 
Spencer Johnsen drew the start on the mound for the Sycamores allowing three hits and three runs while striking out three batters over his 2.0 innings of work.
 
Evan Appelwick and Tommy Harrison both had multi-hit games for Miami with Appelwick connected on a solo home run in the first inning to highlight the RedHawk offense.
 
Carson Byers (1-1) took the loss allowing five hits and seven runs over 1.1 innings in the start. Troy Benko worked 2.2 innings, before Cameron Novak wen the final 4.0 on the mound allowing just one hit while striking out five.
 
How They Scored
  • Miami opened the scoring on Evan Appelwick's solo home run in the top of the first as the RedHawks jumped out to the 1-0 lead.
  • The Sycamores responded with a run in the bottom of the first inning as Carter Beck connected on a double in the right centerfield gap scoring Jorge Cartagena to knot the score up at 1-1.
  • Miami retook the lead in the top of the second on Jamie Rasmussen's two-run double to left center scoring Tommy Harrison and Matthew Buffington to put the RedHawks up 3-1.
  • Indiana State responded with seven runs in the bottom of the second inning to seize control of the game. Carter Beck had the big hit in the inning with a grand slam over the right field wall, while Caden Miller (two-run triple) and Eddie Alonso (RBI single) both drove in runs as the Sycamores went up 8-3.
  • The Sycamores capped the scoring in the contest in the bottom of the third inning as Nick Sutherlin connected on an RBI double down the third base line scoring Nomar Garcia. Caden Miller followed with a two-run single through the left side of the infield with Nick Sutherlin and Carter Beck both scoring to provide the final 11-3 margin.

  • Carter Beck recorded his first home run of the 2026 season and connected on Indiana State's first grand slam of 2026 in the process in the second inning.
  • It marked Indiana State's first grand slam since Nick Sutherlin connected on May 16, 2025, against Illinois State.
  • Carter Beck's five-RBI game marked a new career-high for the junior outfielder, breaking his previous high of four set on March 22, 2025, against Valparaiso.
  • Caden Miller added a career-high four RBIs in the contest, giving him a team-leading seven on the season over the first four games.
  • Emil Estrella ran his hitting streak to five consecutive games after recording two hits on Friday evening. He is the lone Sycamore to hit safely in all five games in 2026.
  • Jack Armstrong worked a career-high 5.0 innings on Friday night and tied his career-high with six strikeouts in picking up the win. Armstrong's previous inning high was 3.2 set against Evansville on April 18, 2025, where he also recorded six strikeouts against the Purple Aces.
  • Armstrong and Carson Seeman have combined to work 10.2 scoreless innings to date on the 2026 season after shutting down the RedHawks for 7.0 innings on Friday night. The Sycamore duo are tied for the team lead with three appearances on the mound with Spencer Johnsen.
  • Spencer Johnsen recorded his first start in the Sycamore Blue & White on Friday night.
  • Indiana State baseball alum Jared Spencer (Toronto Blue Jays organization), Luis Hernandez (Minnesota Twins organization), and Ellison Hanna II were all in attendance at Friday night's game in Port Charlotte.

Indiana State Baseball Season Tickets on Sale Now
Season tickets for the 2026 Indiana State baseball season are now on sale as the Sycamores head into their second season under Head Coach Tracy Archuleta. The Sycamores will play 21 home games inside Bob Warn Field this season, starting on March 4 against Lindenwood.
 
Reserved chairback season tickets can be purchased for $110. General admission season tickets will go on sale as well with adult ($75), seniors ($55), and youth ($40) tickets also being available for purchase. There will be a $5 surcharge added to those wanting tickets printed.
 
The Sycamores have teamed up with Pacesetter Sports and the Spirit Shop for the third consecutive season for a season ticket deal. Fans will receive a $50 Pacesetter gift card for each $110 reserved chairback season ticket, $35 gift card for each $75 general admission season ticket, $25 gift card for each $55 senior general admission ticket, and $20 gift card for each $40 youth season ticket sold.
