Late rally pushes Brown past Indiana State on Saturday afternoon

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Brown sent 15 batters to the plate on their way to scoring nine runs in the bottom of the eighth as the Brown Bears rallied past Indiana State on Saturday afternoon at Centennial Park, 16-12.

The Sycamores (2-4) led 11-7 after their at-bats in the top of the eighth as Eddie Alonso followed Mason Roell's triple with a sacrifice fly to center field to stretch the Indiana State lead to four runs.

Brown (1-2) rallied back in the bottom of the eighth as the home team took advantage of Indiana State pitching struggles as the Brown Bears drew five walks and were hit by two pitches over the nine-run rally. Cam Lagrassa (two-run single), Matt Luigs (two-run single), and Mika Petersen (two-run double) connected on the big hits in the inning to swing the advantage back to the Bears.

Indiana State scratched out a run in the top of the ninth as Sebastian Torres went from first to third on Jorge Cartagena's single to center field and came around to score on Carter Beck's fielder's choice. However, that was all the Sycamores were able to put together in the final frame in dropping the Saturday contest.

Mason Roell was Indiana State's offensive leader on the day as the Sycamore third baseman made his lineup debut on Saturday afternoon. Roell finished a single shy of the cycle after doubling, tripling, and connecting on a solo home run. He also drew a walk and scored a career-high five runs.

Carter Beck, Jorge Cartagena, and Ray Jesse added multi-hit games as Indiana State recorded 12 hits overall in the game. Jesse added his first double and Emil Estrella tripled in the loss.

Estrella (0-1) took the loss in the mound as the right-hander allowed three runs without recording an out over the Brown eighth-inning rally. Overall, six Indiana State pitchers combined to walk 11 batters and hit four on the afternoon.

Petersen, Luigs, and Mark Henshon all drove in three RBIs apiece as Brown picked up their first win of the 2026 season. Petersen and Brady Dever both doubled, while Henshon homered.

Brenden Kline (1-0) took the win on the mound for Brown as the right-hander worked 2.0 innings allowing one hit and one run while striking out one. Camren Piwnicki worked the ninth to close out the game.

  • Brown made it a 10-7 game in the sixth as Henshon singled in Luigs and Alex Benevento drew a bases loaded walk scoring Henshon in the frame.
  • The Sycamores made it 11-7 in the eighth as Eddie Alonso's sacrifice fly to center was deep enough to drive in Roell.
