Sycamores take Sunday night exhibition win over Cougars

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.Riley Mathews and Kaitlynn Long both scored first half goals and Anna Chor added to the Sycamore totals in the second half as Indiana State topped visiting SIUE on Sunday night at Memorial Stadium, 3-1.
 
The Sycamores picked up the win in their lone exhibition of the 2025 preseason as Indiana State ran out 26 different players and utilized three different goalkeepers in the action.
 
Mathews put the Sycamores on the board early as the freshman collected a deflected shot off SIUE goalkeeper Sarah Bozeman inside the box. Mathews made it count, scoring from four yards out at the 15:41 mark in the first half to put Indiana State ahead 1-0.
 
The Sycamores continued to press in the first half as Indiana State utilized ball movement in the midfield to open up the attack for their second goal. Layne Frericks passed to Long on the right side and the sophomore forward connected from the top of the box across the goal and into the left side of the net to make it a 2-0 match at the 34:53 mark on the clock.
 
SIUE came out on the attack at the start of the second half with Savannah DeFini firing from close range at the 46:51 mark, but sophomore goalkeeper Delaney Timmons made a diving stop to deflect the ball left of the net to keep it a 2-0 Sycamore lead.
 
Lina Fasquelle and Tori Angelo both had shots saved over the next 10 minutes as Indiana State continued to control the pace and tempo of the match. Following the required water break in the 68th minute, Chor put the finishing touches on the Indiana State scoring at 71:05 with a shot that sailed from the right side of the box and over a leaping SIUE goalkeeper Kristen Keller into the net to provide the 3-0 lead.
 
The Cougars prevented the clean sheet in the 84th minute as Claire Nieroda found herself alone at the top of the box and placed SIUE's lone goal of the contest in the upper middle over Indiana State keeper Alicia Perez to provide the final scoring margin.
 
Mathews, Skylar Cano, CharlieBleu Sanders, and Ella Roesch all recorded multiple shots throughout the match as Indiana State held the 15-9 edge in shots, 9-2 advantage in shots on goal in the match.
 
Lola Minic, Timmons, and Perez all split time in goal for Indiana State.
 
How They Scored
  • 16' – Riley Mathews collects ball in front of net and beats keeper off deflection from four yards out to give Indiana State the 1-0 lead.
  • 35' – Kaitlynn Long receives pass from Layne Frericks in top right box, fires from 18, and puts it into the lower left corner to give the Sycamores the 2-0 lead.
  • 72' – Anna Chor connects from deep on the right side and puts it over the leaping goalkeeper into the upper left corner unassisted to make it a 3-0 advantage.
  • 84' – SIUE's Claire Nieroda launched from the top of the box from 20 yards out and beat Indiana State keeper Alicia Perez up top to cut the lead to 3-1.
