No. 15 Tennessee powers past Indiana State on Tuesday night

KNOXVILLE, TENN. – No. 15 Tennessee connected on five home runs, two off the bat of Gavin Kilen, as the host Volunteers topped Indiana State on Tuesday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, 12-1.

The Sycamores (22-26) put runners on the base paths in all seven innings, but Indiana State was unable to capitalize on the opportunities in leaving 10 on base against the Volunteers (38-11).

Mason Roell provided the first scoring opportunity in the top of the third inning as the freshman third baseman drilled a double to the wall in left center. After Nomar Garcia moved him to third on a bunt single, the Sycamores hit into a double play allowing Roell to score, but putting two outs on the board. Indiana State continued the rally with Andrew Ortiz and Carlos Pena both singling, but the rally fell short as UT starter Michael Sharman escaped the inning allowing just the one run.

Another leadoff double, this one by Jorge Cartagena in the top of the sixth inning put the Sycamores back in business and the outfielder advanced to third on a passed ball. However, Brayden Krenzel was able to keep the Sycamores off the board in the inning to keep the UT lead intact.

Kilen (twice), Reese Chapman, Andrew Fischer, and Chris Newstrom all homered as Tennessee scored in every inning except for the third when Indiana State reliever Emil Estrella set the Volunteers down in order.

Ortiz had two of Indiana State's six hits in the game, while Cartagena and Roell both doubled in the loss.

Jacob Spencer (0-3) took the loss on the mound allowing six hits and four runs over 2.0 innings. Estrella worked 1.1 innings in relief, while Jack Armstrong and Carson Seeman also saw time on the mound on Tuesday.

Kilen recorded three of UT's 11 hits in the win and added four RBIs and three runs scored in the win. Fischer added a multi-hit game, while Dean Curley and Chapman both drove in a pair of RBIs apiece.

Austin Breedlove (3-0) took the win on Tuesday night with a shutout inning in relief. Sharman worked the first 3.2 innings allowing five hits and a run while striking out three. Brandon Arvidson, Krenzel, and Thomas Crabtree went the rest of the way to close out the contest.
