Missouri State matches Indiana State rally to secure series opening 6-3 win

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri State answered an Indiana State seventh inning rally with one of their own as the Sycamores were unable to take control of the Friday night series opener at Hammons Field in falling, 6-3.
 
Trailing 2-1 heading into the seventh inning, Indiana State (22-27, 10-12) rallied against Missouri State (26-21, 16-6) starter Jason Schaaf. Jorge Cartagena led off the inning with a single to left field and Jackson Taylor drew a full count walk to move him to second. With Max Knight (5-2) on in relief, Eli Gipson drew a walk to load the bases. Two batters later, Carter Beck connected on a two-run single back up the middle scoring Cartagena and Taylor to put the Sycamores ahead 3-2.
 
The Bears responded in the bottom half of the inning as Caden Bogenpohl and Nick Rodriguez both drew one-out walks against Indiana State reliever Ty Brooks (3-4). The Sycamores turned to Gavin Morris out of the bullpen, but the Bears proved up to the task with Jake McCutcheon and Taeg Gollert connecting on back-to-back RBI singles to put Missouri State ahead 4-3 before Morris was able to retire Knight and Zack Stewart on strikes to end the rally.
 
Missouri State added insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning on Rodriguez's two-run home run down the right field line and Knight retired the final seven Indiana State batters he faced in a row to close out the game and secure the series opening win.
 
The Bears took the early lead behind Gollert's second inning solo home run, while Bogenpohl scored on a wild pitch in the third to give Missouri State the 2-0 lead. The Sycamores cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning as Keegan Garis scored on Taylor's RBI ground out.
 
Carter Beck and Jorge Cartagena had two singles apiece as the Sycamores were limited to four hits on Friday night.
 
Breyllin Suriel went 6.0 innings allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out five in the weekend opener. Brooks worked 0.1 innings allowing two walks with both runners scoring, while Morris worked 1.2 innings allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four.
 
Rodriguez, McCutcheon, Gollert, and Knight all had multi-hit games for the Bears as Missouri State connected on 10 hits overall in the game. Knight and Carter Bergman both doubled in addition to Rodriguez and Gollert's home runs.
 
Schaaf went 6.0 innings allowing three hits and three runs (two earned) while walking four and striking out seven. Knight went the final 3.0 innings allowing one hit and a walk while striking out five in securing the win.
 
How They Scored
  • Taeg Gollert gave Missouri State the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to right field to put the Bears ahead early.
  • The Bears added their second run of the game in the bottom of the third as Caden Bogenpohl scored on a wild pitch to make it a 2-0 contest.
  • The Sycamores took one back in the top of the fourth inning as Jackson Taylor connected on a ground ball to the shortstop allowing Keegan Garis to score from third on the play to make it a 2-1 contest.
  • Indiana State loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning before Carter Beck delivered the go-ahead two-run single back up the middle scoring Jorge Cartagena and Taylor to give the Sycamores the 3-2 lead.
  • Missouri State responded in the bottom of the inning as Jake McCutcheon and Gollert recorded back-to-back RBI singles scoring Bogenpohl and Nick Rodriguez to put the Bears back ahead 4-3.
  • Rodriguez capped the scoring with a two-run home run down the right field line in the bottom of the eighth inning scoring Tyler Epstein to provide the final 6-3 score. 
News & Notes
  • Indiana State (10-12) remains a game ahead of Evansville (9-13) and two games up on Bradley (8-14) after both institutions won their respective weekend openers on Friday night.
  • Carter Beck recorded his 21st multi-hit game of the 2025 season tying Carlos Pena for the most by a Sycamore this season.
  • Jorge Cartagena recorded his second multi-hit game of the season and has hit safely in four of the last five contests since coming into the starting lineup against Bradley on May 2.
  • Breyllin Suriel nearly matched his career-high innings' mark after going the first 6.0 on Friday night against Missouri State. His five strikeouts marked his fifth game with five or more strikeouts this season.
  • Gavin Morris remains the Valley ERA leader after Friday's action with a 1.76 mark in conference play. He's allowed an MVC-low six runs over 30.2 innings on the mound.
