Sycamores open road trip with Tuesday night game at Indiana

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State is back on the road this week for a Tuesday night contest at Bart Kaufman Field as the Sycamores travel to Bloomington, Ind. for a nonconference matchup against Indiana. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch and will be carried live on ESPN+ and B1G+.

The Sycamores (18-17) head into the midweek rematch with the Hoosiers after a 3-1 week this past week including wins at Purdue and the series victory at home over Southern Illinois. Indiana (20-16) went 2-2 this past week with a midweek win at home against Ball State, while falling in two of three in the weekend series at Illinois.

Indiana took the first game of the season series against the Sycamores back on March 11 in Bob Warn Field as the Hoosiers claimed the 9-4 midweek nonconference win. Indiana scored five runs in the sixth inning of the contest aided by a pair of Sycamore errors over the stretch to claim the early contest.

Recapping the Weekend
Indiana State took two of the three games this past weekend at Bob Warn Field as the Sycamores claimed the Friday and Sunday wins over Southern Illinois to secure the Missouri Valley series win. The Sycamores topped SIU on Friday night, 9-7, before falling in Saturday's contest, 16-9. Indiana State rallied back in the final game of the series with a 12-8 win on Sunday afternoon in securing their third MVC series win of the season.

Jackson Taylor (.556) and Carter Beck (.500) paced an Indiana State lineup that hit a combined .349 from the plate against the Southern Illinois pitching staff over the weekend. Carlos Pena (.385) added three of Indiana State's five home runs over the series, while Zack Henderson (1.000) and Andrew Ortiz (.750) both connected from the plate in drawing weekend starts against the Salukis.

Gavin Morris (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was untouchable for the Indiana State pitching staff as the senior right-hander worked 5.0 scoreless innings across two games against SIU. He finished with four strikeouts, including two key punchouts in the Sycamores' Sunday win over the Salukis.

Overall, the Indiana State pitching staff combined for a 9.33 team ERA over the series with a 21:18 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The Sycamores allowed the Salukis to hit .292 from the plate over the three games.

IU entered the season coming off a 33-26-1 mark, including a 15-9 record in Big Ten play as the Hoosiers advanced to the 2024 NCAA Knoxville Regional. Last season's success parlayed into this season's preseason recognition as Indiana was selected third overall in the Big Ten's preseason baseball poll with junior outfielder Devin Taylor earning Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year honors.

Taylor continues to live up to the billing in the 2025 season with a team-leading .368 batting average with 10 home runs, 40 RBIs, and 44 runs scored. Jake Hanley (.359), Korbyn Dickerson (.352), and Cooper Malamazian (.333) are among the six Hoosiers hitting .300 or better from the plate on the season as IU has connected at a .305 clip as a team on the year. Dickerson is the team's primary power threat with 15 of IU's 58 home runs.

Twenty different IU pitchers have taken the mound for the Hoosiers across the 2025 season as Indiana has combined for a 5.67 team ERA over 303.0 innings pitched. Jackson Yarberry (0-0, 9.72 ERA) is projected as the midweek starter for the Hoosiers this week, while six different IU pitchers have recorded double-digit appearances on the season and could be in play on Tuesday night.
