Sycamores Fall to Missouri State, 7-3, as Bears Clinch Weekend Series 2-1

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State dropped the third game of their series to Missouri State, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Bears secured the series victory, 2-1.

Missouri State struck first in the fourth inning, breaking a scoreless tie with a four-run rally. Studer led off with a walk, and back-to-back singles from Perales and Baber set the table. 

Baber's hit brought in a run and advanced on a fielding error. A passed ball allowed another run to cross the plate, and Rowland added an RBI double. 

After Cassi Newbanks came in to relieve Hailey Griffin, Gerardy struck out, but Vaughan drove in another run with an RBI single. The inning ended on a groundout, giving the Bears a 4-0 advantage.

The Sycamores answered in the fifth, narrowing the deficit to 4-3. Jordan Thatcher ignited the offense with a single, and Madison Poulson followed with another hit, putting two runners on base and setting the stage for Goodrich.

Morgan Goodrich delivered a 2-RBI triple to left, scoring Thatcher and Poulson. Lauren Marsicek added an RBI single to bring Goodrich home, but the inning ended on a flyout, leaving Indiana State trailing by just one.

In the seventh, Missouri State pulled away, adding three more runs to extend their lead to 7-3. 

Vaughan started the frame with a solo home run to left field. Merced walked, and Derryberry reached on a bunt single. 

Perales then added an RBI single, and Baber brought in another run with a groundout.

Lauren Marsicek led the Sycamores offensively, going 2-3 with an RBI. Madison Poulson, Morgan Goodrich, Hannah Welch, and Jordan Thatcher each contributed a hit, with Goodrich recording a triple and 2 RBIs to lead the team.

Hailey Griffin (7-7) took the loss in the circle, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts. Cassi Newbanks relieved Griffin, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts.

Up next: Indiana State travels to Evansville on Tuesday to wrap up their three-game MVC series, which is tied 1-1. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET and will be live-streamed on ESPN+.
