Gibbs breaks javelin record, Sycamores take top spots in outdoor opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State opened its 2025 outdoor season on a high note Saturday, earning 16 first-place finishes at the Pacesetter Sports Invitational at the Gibson Track and Field Complex.
 
Lillian Gibbs reset her own school record in the javelin, while Noah Bolt (discus and hammer throw), Brittney Burak (10,000m), Kamilla Gibson (3000m steeplechase), Hadley Gradolf (10,000m) and Ivan Weaver (400m) all hit program top-10 marks in the Trees' home-opening outdoor meet. Janiya Bowman (100m) and Casey Hood Jr. (200m) also set all-conditions program top-10 marks.
 
Indiana State placed first as a team on both the men's and women's side. The Sycamores racked up 233 points on the men's side, finishing 44.5 points ahead of second-place Marian (Ind.). Indiana State also earned 208 points on the women's side, 99.5 more than second-place Ball State.

Sprints/Hurdles
Indiana State's success in the sprints and hurdles events carried into the outdoor season opener, with five Sycamores earning first-place finishes and three setting program top-10 marks. Ray Brodie III clocked a career-best 100m time of 10.56 in his first outdoor meet as a Sycamore, while Janiya Bowman ran a time of 11.51 on the women's side, a top-five all-conditions time in program history. The Trees also went 1-2 in the men's 200, as Casey Hood clocked a time of 20.96 which ranks among the top 10 all-conditions times in program history and Tahj Johnson ran a 21.07.
 
Ivan Weaver opened his outdoor season with a strong showing in the 400m, as he climbed into the top 10 in program history with his time of 47.44. Weaver and Trent Jones went 1-2 in the event, with Jones also running a career-best time of 48.06. Indiana State also swept the 100m and 110m hurdles titles, as Rachel Mehringer ran a time of 13.54 in the 100m hurdles and Collin Forrest clocked a time of 14.24 in the 110m hurdles. Forrest was joined in the 110m hurdles top three by David Carnell (14.55) and Parker Doyle (14.57).
 
The Sycamores also got a top-three finish in the men's 4x400m relay, as Xavier Wills, Brodie III, Deangelo Hughey and Jones ran a time of 3:21.01, eight-hundredths of a second ahead of the Sycamores' second team of Caden Emmert, Jake Ottersbach, Nick Burns and Weaver. Indiana State's women's 4x100m relay team of Brooklynn Williams, Dusty Welker, Krystian Dilosa and Sophie Yovanovich ran a time of 48.09 to place seventh.
 
Mid-Distance/Distance
Indiana State's distance crew had a strong season opener, with four Sycamores earning first-place finishes and three program top-10 marks set. Peyton Smith opened the Sycamores' win total early with a first-place time of 17:28.52 in the 5000m.
 
The Sycamores swept the top three spots in the men's and women's 10,000m titles and also took the top spots in the men's and women's 3000m steeplechase. Brittney Burak ran the second-fastest women's 10,000m time in program history at 35:32.69, with Hadley Gradolf also running a program top-10 time of 36:31.71 and Robyn Schemel (39:. Layton Hall took the men's 10,000m title with a career-best time of 31:43.21, while Parker Mimbela (32:11.22) and Ian Gadberry (32:39.08) rounded out the podium sweep for the Sycamores.
 
Halle Miller also added a first-place finish in the women's 1500m for the Sycamores, as the local product ran a career-best time of 4:35.41 and was followed by fellow local produt Gnister Grant with a time of 4:38.28. Jason Dworak also earned a second-place finish in the men's 800m with a time of 1:53.53.
 
Jumps
Indiana State's jumps group started its outdoor campaign on a positive note, with Piere Hill winning the long jump and Janiya Bowman posting one of the top early-season marks. Hill's mark of 7.32m (24-0.25) was a career-best, while Bowman's long jump mark of 5.95m (19-6.25) on the women's side was an all-conditions career best.
 
Fresh off an all-conference showing during indoor season, Ellie Irwin cleared 1.63m (5-4.25) to place third in the high jump in her collegiate outdoor debut. Xavier Sherrell, Noah Gilmore and Amare Draughn all cleared 1.95m (6-4.75) on the men's side.
 
Brooklyn Pfaff earned a second-place finish in the pole vault for the Blue and White after clearing 3.85m (12-7.5), while Amy Luttrell also earned a top-three finish in her first collegiate outdoor meet after clearing 3.70m (12-1.5). Lincoln Hulsey cleared a career-best 4.75m (15-7) in his first collegiate outdoor meet to place fourth on the men's side, with Parker Speth clearing 4.60m (15-1) to finish in the top five.
 
Throws
Indiana State's throwers started their outdoor season with a bang, winning four events and setting three program top-10 marks. Lillian Gibbs broke her own school record in the javelin with a top mark of 45.84 (150-4), becoming the first Sycamore with a mark over 150 feet in the women's javelin. Justin Miller had the top mark in the men's javelin at 46.24m (151-8).
 
Gibbs wasn't the only high performer for the Blue and White, as Noah Bolt set program top-10 marks in the discus (56.00m/183-8, fifth all-time) and hammer throw (61.10m/200-5, sixth all-time). Bolt won the discus and was second in the hammer throw Saturday. The Sycamores also had top-three finishes in the women's discus and hammer throw, as Emma Yoder placed third in the discus with a mark of 44.21m (145-0) and Niesha Anderson had a top mark of 52.91m (173-7) to place second in the hammer throw.
 
Indiana State swept the top spots in the shot put, as Wyatt Puff had a top mark of 18.07m (59-3.5) to place first on the men's side and Olivia Marshall placed first on the women's side in her first outdoor meet as a Sycamore with her career-best mark of 14.50m (47-7). Sloan Cox (17.32m/56-10) also earned a top-three finish on the men's side, while Anderson and Aliseonna Garnett both had top marks of 14.25m (46-9) to complete a podium sweep on the women's side.
