Sycamores utilize patience, timely hitting in 12-4 win over Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Indiana State utilized patience at the plate, timely hitting, and a strong relief performance from Colby Morse on Tuesday night as the Sycamores topped host Bethune-Cookman 12-4 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

The Sycamores (5-3) utilized a school record 16 walks issued at the plate on their way to putting runners on base in eight of the nine innings in the first matchup in program history against Bethune Cookman (2-6). The 16 walks snapped the previous record of 15 walks drawn by Indiana State batters back on May 11, 2013, against Alcorn State.

Indiana State cracked the scoreboard with a five-run fourth inning sparked by Emil Estrella's one-out triple. Estrella scored on a wild pitch, before Nick Sutherlin, Weston Fulk, and Miguel Cantu connected on RBI singles in the inning to stake the Sycamores to the lead.

Bethune-Cookman cut the Sycamores' lead down to 5-4 in the fifth inning on Jorge Rodriguez's two-run double to left center scoring Jesus Vanegas and Armani Newton.

The Sycamores took control of the game with seven runs over the final three innings highlighted by two runs scoring on Eli Gipson's bunt, while Fulk, Cantu, and Estrella also drove in runs.

Colby Morse (1-0) went four shutout innings to keep the Wildcats at bay as the senior right-hander allowed just a triple in the ninth inning and a walk, while striking out three. Morse retired nine BCU batters in a row at one point before closing out the game by retiring Michael Rodriguez on strikes to record his first win at Indiana State.

Ten different Sycamores reached base in the contest highlighted by multi-hit games from Nick Sutherlin, Fulk, and Cantu. Carter Beck and Jeremy Martinez both drew three walks apiece, while Sutherlin and Cantu both reached base four times overall in the contest.

Breyllin Suriel went 3.1 innings allowing two runs and five walks while striking out four in his first start at Indiana State. Aaron Moss allowed three hits and two runs over 1.2 innings, before turning the ball over to Morse to close out the contest.

Four different BCU players recorded hits in Tuesday's loss with Jeter Polledo connecting on a triple, while Jorge Rodriguez and Daniel Figueroa both doubled.

Brandon Vazquez started on the mound for BCU going 1.2 innings on the mound, walking four while striking out one. Isaias Duccasse (0-1) took the loss allowing five runs over 2.0 innings, while four additional BCU pitchers took the mound in the game.

How They Scored
  • Emil Estrella tripled and scored on a wild pitch to spark a five-run, fourth-inning to give Indiana State the early lead. Nick Sutherlin added a two-run single in the inning, while Weston Fulk and Miguel Cantu also added RBI base hits to put the Sycamores ahead 5-0.
  • Daniel Figueroa connected on an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, while Jame Villafane added an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the Indiana State lead down to 5-2.
  • Jorge Rodriguez connected on a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fifth scoring Armani Newton and Jesus Vanegas, but the BCU batter was thrown out trying to take third to end the Wildcats' rally and keep the Sycamores ahead 5-4.
  • An errant throw by the BCU shortstop on Miguel Cantu's grounder in the top of the sixth allowed Nick Sutherlin to score from second and putting the Sycamores ahead 6-4.
  • Indiana State broke the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh as Eli Gipson's bunt single led to Thomas Emerich and Jeremy Martinez scoring as the BCU pitcher threw the ball down the right field line. Gipson came around to score on a balk to make it a 9-4 contest.
  • Weston Fulk, Miguel Cantu, and Emil Estrella all drove in runs in the top of the ninth to provide the final 12-4 margin.
