GREENVILLE, N.C. – Virginia Tech jumped ahead of Indiana State early on the first day of the LeClair Classic as the Sycamores fell to the Hokies on Friday afternoon, 10-2.
The Sycamores (5-4) fell behind early as Virginia Tech (7-2) took the lead on a four-run second inning sparked by a pair of bases-loaded walks. The Hokies added to the lead on a fielder's choice, while Virginia Tech put two more across in the fifth following a Sycamore error.
Indiana State took two back in the bottom of the sixth inning as
Thomas Emerich connected on a sacrifice fly to right scoring
Miguel Cantu.
Eli Gipson followed with an RBI grounder scoring
Keegan Garis to cut the deficit down to 7-2.
The Hokies plated three final runs in the ninth and held the Sycamores off the scoreboard in closing out the contest.
Eight Indiana State hitters connected on singles in the contest, while Emerich and Gipson drove in RBIs.
Max McEwen (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate start as the redshirt sophomore went 3.0 innings allowing four hits and five runs while walking five and strikeout out two.
Carson Seeman and
Jack Armstrong went 2.0 innings apiece in relief, while
Brady Banker,
Cole Chace, and
Cole Pacheco closed out the contest on the mound.
Garret Michel went 3-for-5 from the plate with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, while David Lewis and Sam Tackett had multi-hit contests in the win.
Brett Renfrow (1-1) picked up the win on the mound going 5.0 innings allowing six hits while striking out nine. Andrew Sentlinger, Luke Craytor, and Josh Berzonski closed out the game on the mound.
