TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball continues its season-opening 19-day road trip this week as the Sycamores travel to Daytona Beach, Fla. and Jackie Robinson Ballpark for a Tuesday night contest against Bethune-Cookman. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET with the game to be carried live on YouTube and stats provided on the link on GoSycamores.com.
Indiana State looks to build off Sunday's momentum as the Sycamores took the series finale against Northeastern in Port Charlotte, Fla. over the final week of the Snowbird Baseball Classic. Indiana State fell in both games in Saturday's doubleheader, 7-0 and 5-0, before rallying back late to take Sunday's contest, 5-4, at Centennial Park.
Northeastern's pitching was the difference in the first two games of the series as the Huskies quieted the Sycamores' bats on Saturday afternoon, limiting Indiana State to just five singles in taking the pair of wins. The Sycamores' hitting woes offset solid pitching performances from
Carson Seeman and
Aaron Moss (6.2 IP, 2 R, 3K) in game one and
Grant Parson (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 K) in game two as Northeastern secured their second series win against Indiana State in program history.
The Sycamores rallied back in the finale with
Miguel Cantu providing the needed spark in the eighth-inning rally against the Huskies. Cantu, making his first start with the Sycamores, sliced a leadoff double down the right field line off NU reliever Jack Beauchesne (0-1). After a
Keegan Garis sacrifice bunt moved pinch-runner
Jackson Taylor over to third,
Thomas Emerich connected on a slow bouncer down the third base line. Taylor was off on contact and slid into the plate ahead of the throw to tie the game up at 4-4.
Freshman catcher
Jeremy Martinez kept the Sycamores' rally going in the eighth with a single to left, before Emerich stole third base to put the go-ahead run 90 feet from the plate for
Sebastian Torres. The freshman shortstop worked a 3-1 count before lofting a fly ball to left field deep enough to score Emerich and giving Indiana State the 5-4 lead.
Gavin Morris worked two scoreless innings in relief in securing his first win of the 2025 season, including striking out the final batter with two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth to put Indiana State back above the .500 mark for the 2025 season.
Early season returns from the batting lineup include Martinez pacing the way with a team-high .391 average, including three doubles, seven RBIs, and eight runs scored.
Keegan Garis (.364),
Carter Beck (.360) and Emerich (.304) are also hitting above .300 on the season as the Sycamores are hitting .275 overall from the plate as a team.
Additional offensive leaders include Emerich pacing the way in doubles (4) and runs scored (10), while
Carlos Pena and Beck are tied for the team lead with two home runs apiece. Beck leads the team with 10 RBIs, including a two-run triple in Sunday's win over Northeastern.
Indiana State's pitching lineup has seen a variety of arms get experience in the early going of the season as the Sycamores have posted a team 4.82 ERA over 61.2 innings.
Max McEwen,
Zac Laird, and
Jacob Spencer have all made three appearances early in the season, while
Aaron Moss,
Breyllin Suriel, and Seeman have all come out of the bullpen twice in 2025.
McEwen leads the team with 11 strikeouts over the 2025 season with three appearances of 2.0+ innings on the mound. The Sycamores have posted a team 49:25 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a .276 opponent batting average on the year.
Scouting Bethune-Cookman
Bethune-Cookman enters the Tuesday evening contest coming off their first series win of the 2025 season as the Wildcats took two of three from visiting UMass this past weekend at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. The two wins helped BCU offset an 0-4 start to the 2025 season with the Wildcats dropping their first three contests against Stony Brook, before taking a loss in the midweek on February 19 at Florida International.
Darryl Lee (.333) is the lone BCU player to post an above .300 batting average on the season with the junior outfielder posting five hits, including a double and triple, while driving in a team-high four RBIs over the first seven games. Michael Rodriguez (.296) leads the team in a majority of the statistical categories with eight hits, seven runs, and four doubles, while adding two stolen bases. Overall, BCU is hitting .228 as a team with four home runs on the year.
The BCU pitching staff has featured 13 different pitchers to see time on the mound as the Wildcats have posted a 5.03 team ERA over 59.0 innings. Opponents have hit .242 from the plate against BCU, while the staff has accumulated a 70:30 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Four Bethune-Cookman players were named to the Preseason All-SWAC team with Starting pitcher Tanner Boccabello and closer Pablo Torres were named to the First Team, while outfielder Sergio Rivera and first baseman Manny Souffrain were named to the Second Team. The Wildcats were picked second in the SWAC Preseason Poll accumulating 150 points and three first-place votes.
