O’Bannon shatters 60m meet record as Sycamores retain Coughlan-Malloy Cup

 NORMAL, Ill. – Indiana State returned to its winning ways Friday inside Horton Field House, as the Sycamores won the Coughlan-Malloy Cup for the second straight year.
 
The Sycamores defeated longtime rival Illinois State by an overall score of 157-145, with Indiana State topping the Redbirds on both the men's (79-72) and women's (78-73) sides for the second consecutive season.
 
Indiana State and Illinois State split the 28 first-place finishes, with each school owning the top spot in 14 events. In the end, the Sycamores' depth beyond the top spots prevailed in a closely contested dual meet.

Sprints/Hurdles
Clean sweeps of the men's 60m and 60m hurdles podiums headlined the day for Indiana State's sprinters and hurdlers, with the Sycamores also picking up wins in the women's 300m and 60m hurdles. Terrance O'Bannon paced the men's 60m group with a blistering time of 6.60, with Casey Hood Jr. (6.64) and Daunte Majors (6.74) rounding out the top three. O'Bannon's time broke his own meet record, which he set last year.
 
Indiana State also swept the men's 60m hurdles podium. Parker Doyle claimed the top spot with a time of 8.17, with Collin Forrest (8.22) and David Carnell (8.29) also earning top-three finishes for the Trees. On the women's side, Rachel Mehringer continued her strong start to the season by clocking a 60 hurdles time of 8.43 to place first.
 
The Sycamores also picked up a win in a non-traditional event, as Janiya Bowman ran a time of 40.39 to win the women's 300m. Jahnel Bowman was right behind in second with a time of 41.48. Trent Jones picked up a top-three finish in the men's 300m with a time of 36.08. Indiana State also picked up a second-place finish in the men's 500m, courtesy of Ivan Weaver with a time of 1:05.05.
 
Mid-Distance/Distance
Indiana State's distance crew swept the top spots in the men's and women's mile, with the majority of the Sycamores' distance runners making their indoor season debut Friday. Jason Dworak took home top spot in the men's mile with a time of 4:16.45, with Emma Gresham claiming first place in the women's mile with a time of 4:59.63.
 
The Blue and White also had a pair of podium finishes in the 3000m, led by Brittney Burak placing runner-up on the women's side with a time of 9:55.97. On the men's side, Brandon Mueller placed third in the event with a time of 8:57.22.
 
Indiana State also picked up high finishes in a non-traditional event Friday afternoon, as Nick Burns (second, 2:32.94) and Halle Miller (third, 3:02.79) earned podium spots in the men's and women's 1000m, respectively.
 
Jumps
Indiana State's jumps crew picked up right where it left off, sweeping the triple jump titles while also picking up wins in the men's high jump and women's long jump. Jaden Smith (14.78m/48-6) and Jahnel Bowman (12.01m/39-5) took home the top spots in the men's and women's triple jump, respectively, with Dominique Wood (11.68m/38-4) also placing second on the women's side to give the Trees the top two spots in the event.
 
Ethan Widenhoefer had a day to remember in the high jump, clearing 2.01m (6-7) to place first in the event. Widenhoefer was joined in the top three by Kevin Krtusch (1.98m/6-6), while Ellie Irwin (1.69m/5-6.5) and Kayla Douglas (1.66m/5-5.25) earned top-three finishes on the women's side.
 
The Sycamores had another 1-2 finish in the women's long jump, with Aaliyah Thurman (5.57m/18-3.25) and Janiya Bowman (5.55m/18-2.5) taking the top two spots in the event. Kilan Macklin (7.02m/23-0.5) earned a runner-up finish in the men's long jump.
 
Indiana State picked up four top-three finishes between the men's and women's pole vault Friday. Brooklyn Pfaff and Amy Luttrell both cleared 3.66m (12-0) to finish in a tie for second on the women's side. On the men's side, Parker Speth cleared 4.76m (15-7.25) to place second and Lincoln Hulsey (4.61m/15-1.5) to finish third.
 
Throws
It was business as usual for Indiana State's throwers, with the Sycamores sweeping the top two spots in each of the four events contested Friday.
 
Niesha Anderson had the headline result for the Blue and White in the women's weight throw with a mark of 20.60m (67-7), and also placed second in the shot put (13.83m/45-4.5). Indiana State swept the women's shot put podium with Aliseonna Garnett (14.82m/48-7.5) finishing first and Olivia Marshall (13.25m/43-5.75) coming right behind Anderson in third.
 
The Sycamores' 1-2 punch in the men's shot put of Wyatt Puff and Sloan Cox continued their winning ways Friday, as Puff placed first with a top mark of 17.31m (56-9.5) and Cox was second with a top mark of 17.08m (56-0.5). Elias Foor (16.74m/54-11.25) completed the Sycamores' sweep of the shot put podium, and also came second in the weight throw with a mark of 18.45m (60-6.5). Noah Bolt picked up his second straight win in the weight throw with a mark of 19.86m (65-2).
