TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State baseball's
Zach Davidson was named this week's Missouri Valley Baseball Pitcher of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Davidson becomes the fifth different ISU pitcher to claim the conference's weekly honors joining
Jacob Pruitt (Feb. 19),
Brennyn Cutts (Mar. 11 & Apr. 15),
Cam Edmonson (Mar. 25), and most recently,
Luke Hayden (Apr. 22). It marks the eighth overall honor the Sycamores have claimed this season with
Luis Hernandez (Mar. 25) and
Mike Sears (May 6) both earning MVC Player of the Week honors.
Davidson dominated the Evansville lineup on Saturday afternoon going 4.1 scoreless innings and striking out 10 batters in an extended relief outing to secure Indiana State's 18th consecutive Missouri Valley series win.
The Hartsburg, Mo. native entered a 4-4 contest in the top of the fifth inning with one out and two UE runners in scoring position, proceeding to strike out the next two Purple Aces to end the rally. He posted six strikeouts over his first eight batters and retired four of his last six batters on strikes before turning the ball over to
Simon Gregersen to complete the save.
Davidson's 10-strikeout outing marked the first time a Valley reliever struck out 10 batters in a single game this season and the first time it has happened in the
Mitch Hannahs coaching era.
Over his last two appearances (8.2 innings), Davidson has gone 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA, allowing just four hits while striking out 18 batters. He improved to 3-1 overall on the season with a 3.00 ERA over 20 appearances, posting a 58:15 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 39.0 innings pitched.
Indiana State heads back to the road on Tuesday afternoon as the Sycamores travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on Ball State to start a four-game road trip to wrap up the 2024 regular season. First pitch at Ball Diamond at First Merchants Ballpark Complex is set for 3 p.m. ET with the game to be carried live on ESPN+ and 105.5 The Legend.
