KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Indiana State men's basketball former head coach Duane Klueh has been selected to the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2024, announced earlier today.
Coach Klueh has been inducted into this class as a player, for his tenure playing on the hardwood rather than coaching. Klueh was a student-athlete from 1947-49 for legendary coach John Wooden. As a Sycamore athlete, Klueh is tied for 11
th in most points scored with 1,432 in 91 games played through three seasons, tying with Carl Nicks. Klueh stands No. 9 in career scoring average with 15.7 points per game,
The 1949 graduate is one of two Sycamores that have earned a national player of the year award, standing alongside Larry Bird. In 1948 Klueh was awarded the Helms Foundation National Player of the Year, and in the same year was a Helms Foundation All-American. Indiana State made it to the NAIB tournament championship but fell to Louisville 82-70. He earned a nod to the NAIB All-Tournament team in 1948.
Klueh saw two NAIB tournament runs in 1948 and 1949, both based in Kansas City. The 1948 team won four-straight to make it to the championship, but fell to Louisville 82-70. In 1949, the Sycamores won in rounds one and two and again in the quarterfinal round before falling in the semifinals to Regis College 48-45. ISU played a consolation game and fell to Beloit 67-59.
On the coaching side, Coach Klueh is the winningest coach Sycamore Basketball history with 182 wins in 12 seasons. Klueh was head coach from 1955-67, recording a .602 winning percentage. In his final two seasons as head coach, he amassed a 43-11 record winning 22-of-27 when playing at home. He is a four-time recipient of the ICC Coach of the Year Award (1959, '63, '66, '67).
