Sycamores continue MVC action with a trip to UIC

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- Indiana State Softball will travel to the University of Illinois Chicago for a three-game MVC series this weekend, where play begins Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m ET. All three games will have live stats available and steamed on ESPN+. 

Indiana State (15-20, 4-7) won their most recent MVC series matchup 2-1 over Murray State last weekend. The Sycamores were defeated by Purdue on Tuesday evening in a mid week matchup, with a score of 8-5. The Sycamores are ranked fourth in the MVC with a .259 batting average, which consists of 240 hits, 36 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 118 RBIs, 135 runs scored, and 322 total bases. 

UIC (14-25, 7-7) won their MVC series last weekend, 2-1 over Illinois State, and went 2-0 against Valparaiso in a midweek MVC matchup. UIC has a batting average of .240, which consists of 247 hits, 30 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, 102 RBIs, 110 runs scored, and 313 total bases. 

The Flames lead the all time series over the Sycamores 5-4, which dates back to 1993. Indiana State won the most recent matchup in 2023 with a score of 12-2 in a five-inning run rule over UIC. 

Sycamore Standouts: 

  • Abi Chipps leads the Sycamores offensively, with a .350 batting average, where she is ranked second in the conference in hits, with 41. Chipps leads the Sycamores and is ranked second in the MVC in stolen bases, with 11. 
  • Bri Marx recorded her first collegiate home run in the 8-5 loss against Purdue on Tuesday evening, to tie up the game and drive in two runs for Indiana State.
  • Kennedy Shade has been dominant offensively this season, where she records 25 RBIs, 35 hits, seven doubles, three home runs, and 16 runs scored. Shade has 12 multi-hit games this season, and six multi-RBI games. 
  • Isabella Henning is ranked second in the MVC in doubles, with 11, and she leads the Sycamores with a .565 slugging percentage. I. Henning has three home runs this season as well as Kennedy Shade, and Abby Robakowski

In the Circle:
Hailey Griffin was named the ISU student athlete of the week for the second time this past week. Griffin had a 2-0 record against Murray State last weekened and a 0.00 ERA, where she led Indiana State to the series win over Murray State. The Sycamore right-hander went 11.2 innings posting 12 strikeouts and four walks to secure both wins against the Racers last weekend. Griffin (5-4) has a 2.92 ERA in the 2024 season, where she has struckout 57 batters in 17 appearances.

Scouting UIC:

  • Larisa Villa leads the Flames offensively with a .289 batting average, which consists of 33 hits, six doubles, one triple, one home run, 11 RBIs, and eight runs scored. 
  • Christina Toniolo is 7-6 in the circle for UIC where she has a 4.46 ERA, where she has struck out 63 batters in the 2024 season in 111.0 innings of work.

Indiana State will host Butler at Price Field, on Wednesday, April 17, to compete in a non-conference midweek matchup at 4 p.m ET.
