Sycamores claim top spots at Blue-White Classic

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State wrapped up its first split-squad weekend of the season Saturday, taking home first-place finishes on both the men's and women's side at the Blue-White Classic inside the ISU Indoor Track and Field Facility.
 
The Sycamores took home first-place finishes in nine different events Saturday, with every event group picking up at least one first-place finish. Indiana State had at least one top-three finish in all but two events it took part in.
 
As a team, Indiana State finished with 124 points on the men's side and 179.5 points on the women's side. The Sycamore women finished 94.5 points ahead of second-place Greenville, with the men finishing 48 points ahead of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, who was second.

Sprints/Hurdles
Rachel Mehringer led the way for the Sycamores' sprints and hurdles group, sweeping the 60m and 60m hurdles titles. Mehringer ran a season-best 7.68 to win the 60m, with Collette Wolfe (6.71) and Michelle McDonald (7.77) completing a podium sweep for the Trees. In addition, Mehringer ran a time of 8.57 to win the 60m hurdles ahead of teammates Shanisa Stinson (8.71) and Riley Tuerff (8.82).
 
Mehringer wasn't the only Sycamore to win a hurdles title, as Quincy Armstrong took top spot in the men's 60m hurdles with a time of 8.19, with Parker Doyle (8.37) and Collin Forrest (8.39) completing a sweep of the top three spots.
 
Indiana State also picked up first-place finishes in the women's 200m and 400m races, as Tuerff ran a time of 25.68 to place first in the 200m and Alysha Bradford clocked a time of 58.88 to win the 400m. On the men's side, Forrest (23.54) and Doyle (23.61) both placed in the top five of the 200m.
 
Distance
Indiana State picked up top-three finishes in all four distance events the Sycamores competed in at home, with Kamilla Gibson (5:19.38) and Alli Steffey (5:21.99) both placing in the top three in the women's mile. The duo were joined by Ryan Handy, who placed second in the men's mile with a time of 4:20.55.
 
The Sycamores' 3000m contingent produced a pair of top-three finishes. Kyra Young recorded the top finish for the Trees with a second-place result in the women's 3000m, her time coming in at 10:18.98. On the men's side, Ian Gadberry earned a third-place finish with a time of 8:51.45.
 
Jumps/Pole Vault
The pole vault continued to be a top event for the Sycamores, who claimed all three podium spots on the women's side. Abby Ballengee and Kennedy Merrell both cleared a career-best 3.72m (12-02.50), with Maddie Welsh clearing 3.57m (11-08.50). Indiana State also took the top spot in the men's pole vault, with Dan O'Laughlin clearing 4.23m (13-10.50).
 
The Sycamores also picked up top-three finishes in both the women's high jump and long jump. In the high jump, Kayla Douglas cleared 1.60m (5-03.00) to lead the way for the Blue and White, while Kyrsten Fehribach recorded a top mark of 5.21m (17-01.25) to lead the way for the Trees in the long jump. Douglas also recorded a top-five finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.08m (16-08.00).
 
Throws
Indiana State swept the men's throws titles, while also earning top-three spots in both women's throws events contested Saturday. Wyatt Puff tied his season-best mark in the shot put of 18.28m (59-11.75), while Brett Norton topped the weight throw with a season-best mark of 19.27m (63-02.75). Ryan Golliher took podium spots in both the shot put (16.26m/53-04.25) and weight throw (18.08m/59-04.00), while Norton also placed second in the shot put (16.97m/55-08.25).
 
Aliseonna Garnett led the way for Indiana State's women's throwers, earning podium finishes in both events. Garnett finished second in the shot put (12.60m/41-04.25) and third in the shot put (16.24m/53-03.50).
 
Also among the notables for the afternoon, former Sycamore All-American and current assistant coach Erin Reese set a world-leading mark in the weight throw of 25.26m (82-10.50), which also ranks in the top 10 all-time in the event.

A second straight split-squad weekend awaits for Indiana State, which will send athletes to the GVSU Big Meet, Marian Indoor Invitational and Tyson Invitational the weekend of Feb. 9-10.
