Sycamores start off 2-0 in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- Indiana State Softball starts off with a 2-0 record on Friday in Memphis, Tenn. 

The Sycamores won both of their games on Friday afternoon in the Blues City Classic Tournament, against SIUE in eight innings and Tennessee Tech in a five inning run-rule. 

Game One: Indiana State 4, SIUE 3

Indiana State pulls out a victory in game one over SIUE in eight innings. 

The Sycamores trailed the game until the seventh inning when Abby Robakowski hit a solo home run to tie the game 1-1. 

Indiana State held the Cougars scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into eight innings. 

The Sycamores scored three runs in the eighth inning to take the lead 4-1 over the Cougars. Lauren Sackett singled to left field to score Danielle Henning while Abi Chipps reached on an error to score Sackett. Kenzie Cornwell with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ana Macha and put the final run on the board for Indiana State in the victory. 

The Cougars rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-run home run by Grace Lueke to cut the Sycamores lead to 4-3. The Sycamores got the next three outs to close out the victory. 

Lauren Sackett started in the circle for the Sycamores where she went 5.0 innings with six strikeouts, allowing four hits and one run scored. Hailey Griffin took the win for the Sycamores in the final 3.0 innings. Griffin recorded two strikeouts where she allowed two hits and two runs scored. 

Other hits included a double from Haley Webb in the third inning and Isabella Henning connected on a single for the Sycamores in inning four over Sydney Baalman who threw a complete game for SIUE. 

News & Notes:

Game Two: Indiana State 13, Tennessee Tech 0 (5inn.)

The Sycamores win game two in a five inning run-rule over Tennessee Tech with a score of 13-0. 

Indiana State got the lead early, where they scored 10 runs in the second inning. Kennedy Shade and Abby Robakowski started the hitting streak when they both connected on singles. Livi Colip connected on an RBI single to put the first run on the board for the Sycamores. Ana Macha kept the momentum going in the second inning with a 2 RBI single to advance the lead to 3-0 with one out. Abi Chipps singled down the left field line to load the bases for Indiana State before Danielle Hennings walk scored Lauren Marsicek. Abi Chipps, Danielle Henning, and Isabella Henning added three more runs for ISU when Kennedy Shade was hit by a pitch, Abby Robakowski and Kenzie Cornwell were walked and advanced bases on a passed ball to score Shade. Lauren Marsicek connected on an RBI single to score Cornwell and further the lead to 10-0 over the Golden Eagles. 

The Sycamores kept the scoring going into inning three, where they added two more runs to the board. Abi Chipps led off with a single to left field, and Danielle Henning reached first base on an error while Isabella Henning walked to make the bases loaded for Indiana State. Kenzie Cornwells 2 RBI single scores Abi Chipps and Danielle Henning advancing the Sycamores lead to 12-0. 

Indiana State recorded their final run in the victory in inning four. Lauren Marsicek doubled to left field, and Danielle Henning hit a triple off the back wall for the Sycamores. Ana Macha singled down the left field line, but was thrown out at second while Marsicek scored to advance the lead to 13-0 over Tennessee Tech. 

Megan Asher took the win in the circle for the Sycamores throwing 4.0 innings while allowing only two hits and zero runs scored. Cassi Newbanks took over the ball in the final inning to close out the victory for Indiana State, where she recorded one strikeout, and allowed zero hits and zero runs scored.

Play will continue tomorrow for the Sycamores at 5:30 p.m. ET. beginning with a matchup against Memphis and they will turn around to play Tennessee Tech at 8:00 p.m. ET.
