NORTH PORT, Fla. –
Luis Hernandez drove in three RBIs and five Indiana State pitchers combined to hold the high-powered Florida Gulf Coast offense to just five hits and one earned run as the Sycamores topped the Eagles on Wednesday night at Cool Today Ballpark, 5-2.
The Sycamores (4-0) recorded their fourth consecutive win to open the season as Indiana State remains undefeated in their season-opening swing through the Sunshine State. The four-game winning streak remains the longest to open the season for ISU since the 2019 season when the Sycamores won their first seven contests.
Hernandez recorded his second consecutive three RBI game after previously driving in three runs in the Sycamores' 5-0 win over South Florida on Monday afternoon. The junior designated hitter connected on a sacrifice fly scoring
Randal Diaz in the third inning and added a two-run double in the top of the fourth scoring
Dominic Listi and
Josue Urdaneta to provide the ISU pitching staff all the support they would need on the afternoon.
Cole Gilley (1-0) picked up his first win of the 2024 season with 3.1 innings in relief. Gilley struck out three and pitched the Sycamores out of trouble in the third and fifth innings before handing the ball to
Adam Berghorst in the sixth. Berghorst would go the next 2.2 innings in hitless relief, while
Zach Davidson (S, 1) recorded his first save of the season striking out two batters in a scoreless ninth frame.
Adam Pottinger and
Randal Diaz both added RBIs against FGCU (0-4) as the Sycamores recorded their third consecutive win over the Eagles in the opponent series history. Seven different Sycamores recorded hits in the game with Listi, Hernandez, and Pottinger all doubling in the win.
Cutts went the first two innings of scoreless baseball before handing the ball to
Aaron Moss to start the third inning. Moss allowed two runners to reach before handing the ball to Gilley and the Sycamore staff shutdown the Eagles the rest of the way.
Florida Gulf Coast scattered five hits in the field on Wednesday night with Mac Moise posting the team's lone extra-base hit with a double in the bottom of the fifth.
Matt Kavanaugh (0-1) took the loss on the mound going the first 2.2 innings allowing three hits and two runs while striking out two. Overall, FGCU utilized six different pitchers on the mound on Wednesday night.
