Sycamores defeat UT Martin, fall to SLU to close out weekend in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sycamores conclude their weekend with a record of 3-1 in the Roar City Invitational, defeating Western Michigan, Tennessee State, and UT Martin, and falling to SLU in their final game.

 

Indiana State is now 4-5 on the season after two weekends of tournament play.

 

Game One: Indiana State 10, UT Martin 1

The Sycamores won their first game on Sunday afternoon with a score of 10-1 in a five inning run-rule over UT Martin. 

 

Indiana State recorded 11 hits in the victory over UT Martin with all 10 runs coming from the first and second innings. 

 

The Sycamores took the lead early in the first inning where they recorded six hits and five runs. 

 

Abi Chipps and Danielle Henning each with singles in their first at bats, and Isabella Henning's double scored Abi Chipps, which started the lead for Indiana State. Kennedy Shade kept the bats going in the first inning with a double to drive in runs from Danielle Henning and Isabella Henning to advance their lead to 3-0 with zero outs. Kenzie Cornwell recorded an RBI single for the Sycamores where she advanced to second on the throw, and Kennedy Shade scored. Annie Waggoner recorded her first at bat for Indiana State where she got her first collegiate hit, RBI, and stolen base for the Sycamores to score Cornwell and advance the Sycamores lead to 5-0. 

 

Indiana State kept their hitting streak going into the second inning where they recorded four hits and five runs. 

 

Isabella Henning added a single in inning two, and Kennedy Shade recorded her second 2-RBI double for the Sycamores advancing the lead to 7-0 over the Skyhawks. Sophie Esposito's double drove in Hannah Welch, and to wrap up inning two, Morgan Goodrich's RBI single added the final run for the Sycamores making the score 10-0. 

 

Luci Kapelka also connected on a hit for the Sycamores in the fourth inning. 
 

Lauren Sackett (3-2) took the win in the circle for Indiana State in 5.0 innings where she allowed five hits and one run scored. The Skyhawks recorded three of their five hits in the third inning where they earned their one run of the game, with a Kaci Fuller RBI single.

  • Annie Waggoner records her first collegiate hit, RBI, and stolen base in the victory.

Game Two: Saint Louis 5, Indiana State 1

Indiana State fought hard, but came up short in their final game at the Roar City Invitational, with a score of 5-1 against SLU. 

 

Saint Louis took the lead in the first inning where they scored two runs, and took control over the game in the third inning when they put another two runs on the board to make the score 4-0 against the Sycamores.

 

The Sycamores rallied in the fourth inning where they scored their solo run of the game. Kenzie Cornwell recorded her second hit of the day, while Livi Colip added a single up the middle. Abby Robakowski put one on the board for the Sycamores with an infield single which scored Kenzie Cornwell to cut down the lead to 4-1. 

 

Other hits from the Sycamores came from a double by Isabella Henning in the first inning, and a single by Abi Chipps in the third inning. Freshman Isabel Royle took the victory in the circle for SLU. 

 

Cassi Newbanks (1-2) took the loss in the circle for the Sycamores pitching 2.1 innings where she allowed three hits and four runs scored before turning over the ball to Hailey Griffin. Griffin allowed two hits and one run scored, while also striking out six batters in the loss against the Billikens. 

 

Up Next: 

The Sycamores will travel to Memphis, Tenn. to compete in the Blues City Classic hosted by University of Memphis on Feb 23-25. ISU will face SIUE, Tennessee Tech, and Memphis.
