Brown powers Sycamores past Louisville, 8-7, in 2024 season opener

TAMPA, Fla. Henry Brown connected on the go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning and Jared Spencer shut the door for his first save of the season as Indiana State topped Louisville in Friday's season-opener at the USF Baseball Stadium, 8-7.
 
The Sycamores (1-0) trailed 7-5 following a three-run Louisville (0-1) sixth inning highlighted by a pair of RBI triples in the frame. Dominic Listi started the Indiana State rally after getting hit by a pitch, while Grant Magill singled to right to put two on for Brown. The junior first baseman connected on the first pitch of the at-bat from UL reliever Riley Phillips (0-1) lofting a deep drive over the centerfield wall to clear the bases and put ISU back in the lead 8-7.
 
Brennyn Cutts (1-0) retired the Cardinals in order in the seventh and Zach Davidson retired the Cardinals courtesy of a double-play ball in the bottom of the eighth before turning it over to Spencer (S, 1) for the ninth. The junior closer struck out a pair in his first save of the 2024 season to retired Louisville in the ninth and secure the win.
 
Five Sycamores recorded multi-hit games on Friday afternoon highlighted by Brown's four-RBI game. Randal Diaz, Listi, Magill, and Parker Stinson all added two hits apiece in the win, while Listi (3), Magill (2), and Brown (2) all scored two runs apiece. Adam Pottinger and Mike Sears both recorded stolen bases.
 
Cutts picked up his first win on the mound going 3.0 innings in relief. The junior right-hander allowed three hits and three runs while striking out two after taking the mound for starter Cam Edmonson. The senior left-hander went the first 4.0 innings allowing six hits and four runs (one earned), while striking out two in the no-decision. Davidson and Spencer both faced the minimum to close out the game.
 
All nine batters in the Louisville lineup recorded hits with five going for extra-bases in the contest. Luke Napleton, Ryan McCoy, and Gavin Kilen all tripled to the Cardinals, while Isaac Humphrey and Lucas Moore both doubled in the loss.
 
Sebastian Gongorra went the first 5.0 innings in taking a no-decision on the mound for the Cardinals. The left-hander allowed five hits and two runs while striking out seven. Phillips went 1.1 innings in taking the loss, while Jake Karaba went 2.1 shutout innings to close out the game.
 
How They Scored
  • Parker Stinson connected on a bases-loaded RBI single in the top of the second inning driving in Dominic Listi to put the Sycamores on the board first. Grant Magill scored later in the frame to make it a 2-0 ISU lead.
  • The Cardinals took their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the third inning as JT Benson singled home Logan Beard before Luke Napleton connected on an RBI triple to right field and came around to score on an ISU error to go up 3-2.
  • Louisville made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Beard singled home Eddie King Jr.
  • Indiana State retook the lead in the top of the sixth with Magill, Henry Brown, and Randal Diaz all driving in runs in the frame to make it a 5-4 game.
  • The Cardinals answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by back-to-back RBI triples from Ryan McCoy and Gavin Kilen, before Lucas Moore connected on an RBI fielder's choice to go back ahead 7-5.
  • The Sycamores took the lead for good in the top of the seventh as Henry Brown connected on a one-out three-run home run over the centerfield wall scoring Magill and Listi to provide the final 8-7 margin.
News & Notes
  • Randal Diaz (21) and Grant Magill (11) both extended their on-base streaks on Friday afternoon as the Sycamore duo continued double-digit streaks dating back to 2023.
  • Henry Brown's three-run home run marked his second collegiate home run and first since going deep against Southern Illinois (Apr. 24, 2023).
  • Cam Edmonson drew the opening day start for the first time in his collegiate career. It marked his fifth career start on the mound and first since taking the mound against Indiana back on April 4, 2023.
  • Brennyn Cutts recorded his fifth collegiate win and first since picking up the W against Ball State back on May 9, 2023.
  • Jared Spencer recorded his eighth collegiate save and first since shutting down Iowa in the Terre Haute Regional back on June 3, 2023.
