TAMPA, Fla. –
Jacob Pruitt struck out a career-high nine batters over 6.0 innings of work and
Dominic Listi scored twice as Indiana State topped Connecticut, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the USF Baseball Stadium.
In a battle between 2023 NCAA postseason teams and just the second meeting all-time between the programs, the Sycamores (2-0) held off the Huskies (2-1) on a gray and rainy day down in Tampa. Pruitt (1-0) was the linchpin on the mound for the Sycamores surrendering just four hits and two walks in a career-outing on the rubber before turning the ball over to the ISU bullpen.
The Sycamores struck early in the bottom of the second with
Dominic Listi connecting on a double to right center, advancing on a wild pitch, and then scoring on
Grant Magill's RBI groundout to give ISU the early 1-0 lead.
Pruitt made the lead stick as the sophomore right-hander struck out eight of his nine batters from the third through the first out of the sixth inning, including recording all three outs on strikeouts in the fourth to keep the Huskies offense stymied at the plate.
Listi crossed the plate for the second time for ISU in the bottom of the seventh as
Henry Brown connected on a two-out RBI double to left center giving the Sycamores the 2-0 advantage.
Simon Gregersen pitched his way through the UConn lineup in the seventh and eighth innings before running into trouble in the ninth as the Huskies put two on with none out in the inning.
Adam Berghorst (S, 1) entered and surrendered a Maddix Dalena RBI groundout as UConn cut the ISU lead down to one, but the redshirt junior right-hander was able to get a pair of fly balls to
Parker Stinson in right and Listi in left field to quell the rally and end the game.
Seven Sycamores recorded hits in the game with Listi and Brown both connecting on doubles in the win.
Adam Pottinger was plunked for the first time on the season to reach base as well.
Stephen Quigley (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Huskies as the right-hander allowed five hits and one run while striking out five over 5.2 innings. Braden Quinn, Joe Carrea, and Gabe Van Emon went the final 2.1 innings to close out the contest.
Tammaro doubled to highlight UConn's six hits in the game, while Jake Studley added a pair of singles in the loss.
How They Scored
- Grant Magill battled through a 10-pitch at-bat before connecting on an RBI groundout to score Dominic Listi in the bottom of the second to give Indiana State the 1-0 lead. Listi reached earlier in the inning on a double to put the Sycamores in scoring position.
- Henry Brown connected on a two-out RBI double to left center in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring Listi to give ISU the 2-0 lead. Listi reached on walk and advanced to second on a Magill groundout before coming around to score.
- UConn narrowed the gap to 2-1 in the top of the ninth as Maddix Dalena brought home Paul Tammaro with an RBI groundout, but the game-tying run was stranded at third base to provide the final margin.
News & Notes
- Randal Diaz (22) and Grant Magill (12) both extended their on-base streaks on Saturday afternoon as the Sycamore duo continued double-digit streaks dating back to 2023.
- Four of Henry Brown's team-high five RBIs have come during the seventh inning this season following his RBI double against the Huskies.
- Dominic Listi has reached base in five of his seven plate appearances on the season and leads ISU with five runs scored over the first two games.
- Jacob Pruitt went a career-long 6.0 innings in just his second collegiate start. The Yorktown, Ind. native's first start came last season at Florida Gulf Coast (Feb. 21, 2023) where he went 1.0 inning in the Sycamores' eventual win over the Eagles.
- Pruitt's nine strikeouts were also a career-high, while ISU's 11 strikeouts as a staff marked the first time the Sycamore pitchers hit double-digits in 2024.
- Adam Berghorst (Michigan State) became the second newcomer to make his Indiana State debut this weekend joining Listi (North Central College).
- ISU moves to 2-0 all-time against UConn with Saturday's win. It marked the first time the two teams had lined up against each other since February 15, 2014, when ISU topped the Huskies 3-0 in Port Charlotte.
