Sycamores drop pair to Colgate, Houston on day two of Houston Invite

HOUSTON, Texas – Sycamores drop pair on Saturday at Houston Invite  

Game One: Colgate 9, Indiana State 1 

The Sycamores fell behind early after a four-run inning from the Raiders in the second day of the Houston Invite and were unable to rally back in Saturday's opening game against Colgate. 

Colgate scored four runs in the first inning highlighted by Kiley Shelton's two-run home run to take the early lead over the Sycamores. 

Indiana State put their lone run on the board in the second inning. Abby Robakowski started the inning off with a single and Kenzie Cornwell drove Morgan Goodrich in with an RBI sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to 4-1. 

Colgate would go on to score five more runs over the rest of the game with Quinn Livesay homering twice, while Adrienne Nardone added a solo shot in the Raiders' win. 

Cassi Newbanks (0-2) took the loss in the circle for the Sycamores. The junior pitched the first inning allowing four runs and two hits. Hailey Griffin took over in the second inning, going 5.1 innings in relief while allowing three runs and three hits. Griffin recorded seven strikeouts to set a new career high for strikeouts in a game. Annie Waggoner closed out the final 0.2 innings for the Sycamore pitching staff.  

Isabella Henning, Sophie Esposito, Kenzie Cornwell, and Ana Macha all recorded singles for the Sycamores as ISU connected on five hits against Colgate starter Bailey Misken (1-1). The Raiders' pitcher went the distance with the complete game win.

  • Hailey Griffin recorded seven strikeouts to set a new single game career high.

Game Two: Houston 6, Indiana State 1
Houston jumped out to an early lead over the Sycamores to secure the 6-1 win in Indiana State's final game of day two at the Houston Invite.

The Cougars scored four runs in the first inning over the Sycamores highlighted by Bri Cantu and Turiya Coleman's pair of two-run home runs to take the early lead. Cantu added an RBI double and Mikalah Nitta an RBI single in the fourth to give Houston the 6-0 lead.

Indiana State mounted a rally late in the top of the seventh as Morgan Goodrich and Kenzie Cornwell both reached on infield singles. Danielle Henning connected on an RBI groundout scoring Goodrich to put the Sycamores in the scoring column, but that was it for the Sycamores late in the loss.

Lauren Sackett (0-2) took the loss in the circle for the Sycamores pitching 4.0 innings allowing ten hits and six runs. Sackett bounced back from the early pair of home runs to retire six batters in a row at one point before turning the ball over to Megan Asher in the fifth. 

Megan Asher took over for Indiana State and made a strong finish going 2.0 innings in relief allowing two hits and zero runs. Freshman catcher Haley Webb recorded her first start of the season behind the plate. 

Abi Chipps, Goodrich, and Cornwell all connected on singles for the Sycamores in the loss. Cornwell reached base in all three plate appearances drawing two walks in addition to her base hit.

Houston reliever Paris Lehman (1-0) took the win going 4.0 innings allowing two hits and a run scored. Starter Tamya Waiters went the first 3.0 innings allowing one hit while striking out two.

The Sycamores will wrap up the weekend with one final game tomorrow at 10:30 a.m ET against Colgate.
