TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State Athletics is excited to partner with The Arc of The Wabash Valley to make Hulman Center sensory-friendly.
The Sycamores have partnered with The Arc on the implementation of the "Sycamores Sensory Wall" which will be located on the concourse level of Hulman Center off the 9th Street entrance. It was unveiled in a brief, private ceremony on Thursday, November 21.
"We're so grateful for our partnership with The Arc of the Wabash Valley and the tools they've provided us to become more inclusive and accommodating of families with sensory needs," Director of Athletics Nathan Christensen said. "We now have physical space for those individuals to feel safe and secure in the event of a sensory overload. We're proud to provide this space within our venue."
"The Arc of The Wabash Valley is thrilled to sponsor ISU's first sensory wall in the Hulman Center," Arc CEO David Ofsansky said. "Sensory walls can be beneficial in providing stress relief for people of all ages, particularly children and those with disabilities and sensory processing challenges. We look forward to watching the community interact with and enjoy this unique attraction."
An estimated one in six people in the United States have sensory processing needs. Examples of fellow community members who may experience sensory challenges include individuals with autism, chronic pain disorders, sensory processing disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation can be aggravated by the overstimulation and noise frequently found at sporting events, making it difficult for these fans and their friends and family members to participate in communal experiences.
"I am thrilled to see this idea of a sensory wall come to life," Assistant Athletic Director for Sponsorships Corey Clark said. "This project holds immense significance for me, as autism is close to my heart. I believe that this sensory wall will create a welcoming and engaging space that supports those who experience the world differently. It's more than just an installation; it's a step towards fostering understanding and inclusivity in our community. I can't thank David and his team enough for supporting this project."
The Sycamores Sensory Wall will feature multiple stations that will help engage the senses and encourage relaxation. Among the stations will include a HABA 3-Piece Sensory Learning Wall, a 3D basketball for touch, as well as a Sycamore Sam with touchable fur.
