Sycamores reclaim Coughlan-Malloy cup behind dominant all-around showing

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State captured the Coughlan-Malloy Cup for the first time since 2017 Friday afternoon, defeating longtime rival Illinois State 178-118 in the annual dual meet inside the Indoor Track and Field Facility.
 
The Sycamores earned first-place finishes in 21 of the 28 events contested between the schools, winning the men's competition 92-56 and the women's competition 86-62. The 178 combined points, 92 points on the men's side and 86 points on the women's side were all the most for the Sycamores in the meet since the 2015 edition. The 60-point margin of victory was also the largest for either side since that 2015 edition, which Indiana State won 189-105.
 
In addition to claiming the cup win over their Missouri Valley Conference rival, the Sycamores set four meet records and two facility records Friday. Terrance O'Bannon and Will Staggs found their way into the record books for the second straight meet in the 60m and pole vault, respectively, while Grace Quinlan (high jump) and Rachel Mehringer (60m hurdles) also set meet records. O'Bannon and Mehringer also broke facility records in their respective events.

Sprints/Hurdles
Indiana State's sprinters put on a show Friday, sweeping the men's and women's 60m, 200m and 400m titles. Included in that was a meet and facility record-time of 6.66 in the men's 60m from Terrance O'Bannon, with Casey Hood Jr. moving up to third in program history in the event at 6.69. Hood Jr. also took home the men's 200m title with a time of 21.77, while Isiah Thomas placed third in both events in his first action of the season with times of 6.74 in the 60m and 22.21 in the 200m. Tahj Johnson (49.14), Cameron Stevens (49.49) and Trent Jones swept the podium for the Sycamores in the men's 400m, with Johnson and Stevens posting strong showings in their season debuts.
 
Angel Thomas had another strong meet for the Sycamores in the short sprints, taking top spot in the women's 60m with a time of 7.71 and also placing third in the 200m with a time of 25.78. The 200m time was part of a podium sweep for Indiana State, with Janiya Bowman taking top spot at 24.79 and Sophie Yovanovich placing second at 25.20. Iyanla Hunter led the way for the Trees in the 400m with a time of 57.23, with Emily Lowe behind her in second at 1:01.10.
 
The Sycamore hurdlers had a strong showing for the second straight meet, with Rachel Mehringer breaking the meet and facility record in the 60m hurdles prelims with a time of 8.42. Mehringer ran a time of 8.54 in the finals to place first, while Shanisa Stinson finished third with a time of 8.73. On the men's side, Quincy Armstrong continued his strong start to the season with a time of 8.10 to finish second, while Collin Forrest clocked a career-best time of 8.18 to earn a top-five finish.
 
In addition to all the individual success, Indiana State swept both the men's and women's 4x400m relay titles. Jones, Johnson, Nick Burns and Stevens teamed up to run a time of 3:20.33 in the men's 4x400m relay, defeating Illinois State's team in a photo finish by one-hundredth of a second. Bowman, Riley Tuerff, Lowe and Hunter ran a time of 3:55.78 to take the top spot in the women's 4x400m relay.
 
Distance
Friday's meet was the first of the season for most of Indiana State's distance crew, and the Sycamores had a strong showing in their return to the track.
 
Jason Dworak led a sweep for the Blue and White in the men's mile with a time of 4:13.38, with Jackson Krieg (4:17.07) and Ethan Breen (4:17.50) right behind in second and third. Morgan Dyer also earned a top-three finish in the women's mile with a time of 5:22.25.
 
The Sycamores' other first-place finish among the distance and mid-distance events came in the men's 800m, with Nick Burns running a time of 1:57.08 to take home the top spot. On the women's side, Halle Miller earned a second-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:21.79.
 
Indiana State also had a strong showing in the 3000m, as Logan Pietrzak (8:34.31) finished second on the men's side and Erica Barker (10:20.75) finished third on the women's side.
 
Jumps/Pole Vault
Indiana State won six of the eight jumps events contested in Friday's meet, including sweeps of the men;s and women's long jump and pole vault titles. Will Staggs continued his climb up the nation's ranks in the men's pole vault, setting a meet record of 5.35m (17-06.50), while Parker Speth cleared a career-best 4.94m (16-02.50) to place second. The Trees also took the top three spots in the women's pole vault, as Brooklyn Giertz-Pfaff cleared 3.82m (12-06.25), while Landis Brandon and Kennedy Merrell both cleared 3.52m (11-06.50).
 
In addition to her success in the sprints events, Janiya Bowman also placed first in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.68m (18-07.75). Faith Frye (5.53m/18-01.75) and Claire Pittman (5.50m/18-00.50) completed the podium sweep of the event for the Sycamores, while Mitch Conard (7.25m/23-09.50) and Ali Ilupeju (7.07m/23-02.50) took home the top two spots in the even on the men's side.
 
Grace Quinlan continued her strong start to the season by breaking the meet record in the women's high jump after clearing 1.75m (5-08.75). Quinlan moved up to sixth in program history in the event, while Kyrsten Fehribach cleared a season-best 1.68m (5-06.00) to place second in the event. Kevin Krutsch earned a second-place finish in the men's high jump after clearing 2.03m (6-08.00).
 
Indiana State also earned a first-place finish in the men's triple jump, as Jaden Smith led the way for the Sycamores with a top mark of 14.69m (48-02.50). Shomari Rogers-Walton earned a second-place finish with a mark of 14.38m (47-02.25), while Dominique Wood placed second in the women's triple jump with a mark of 11.31m (37-01.25).
 
Throws
The Sycamore throws group had a top-notch performance Friday, sweeping the top spot in all four throws events for the second straight meet. Niesha Anderson had the headline result for the throws group, winning the women's weight throw with a mark of 20.75m (68-01.00). Anderson moved up to fourth in program history in the event and also ranks in the top 10 nationally for the 2023-24 season, while she also placed second in the shot put with a top throw of 13.88m (46-06.50).
 
Hannah Redlin took top spot in the women's shot put with a throw of 15.06m (49-05.00), moving up to ninth in program history in the event. In addition, she also earned a third-place finish in the weight throw with a top mark of 14.87m (48-09.50).
 
Wyatt Puff led the way for the Trees in the men's shot put for the second straight meet, earning a first-place finish with a mark of 18.07m (59-03.50). The Sycamores also took the top two spots in the men's weight throw, as Brett Norton finished first with a mark of 19.40m (63-07.75) and Elias Foor placed second with a top mark of 19.35m (63-06.00)
