TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The regular season wraps up Sunday when the Sycamores host Missouri State at Hulman Center on senior day. Tip-off is set for 2pm on ESPN+ as ISU looks to bounce back after snapping its seven-game win streak with a last-second, one-point loss at Belmont Wednesday.
Indiana State will be recognizing the six members of its senior class in a pregame ceremony with a tribute video and speeches from
Cooper Neese and Coach Schertz right after the game. The senior class includes
Cooper Neese,
Cameron Henry,
Kailex Stephens,
Courvoisier McCauley,
Trenton Gibson, and
Cade McKnight.
With his third assist of the day at Belmont early in the first half,
Julian Larry notched his 100th assist of the season. He joins teammate
Cameron Henry with that feat this year, and it is the first time two Sycamores have recorded 100 assists in the same season since Matt Renn and Michael Mesner in 2000-01. He finished the game with a team-high six assists.
Courvoisier McCauley hit three triples at Belmont and moved into sole possession of second place on Indiana State's all-time list of 3-pointers in a single season with 94. He has hit three or more threes in seven straight games and 20 times total this season.
Cooper Neese hit three triples at Belmont for the fourth time this season, all four times coming in the last seven games. He is four 3-pointers away from tying Jordan Printy for fourth place on Indiana State's all-time list of career 3-pointers made.
The Sycamores hit nine threes at Belmont to bring their season total to 282 which extends the program record for 3-pointers in a single season.
Drake and Bradley each sit at 15-4 and face each other Sunday for the outright regular season title while Indiana State, Belmont, and Southern Indiana will be fighting for a higher seed as they all sit tied for third at 13-6.
SERIES HISTORY
ISU trails the all-time series against MSU 53-27 dating back to 1952, but leads the series in Terre Haute, 20-16. The two teams split their season series last year, each taking the win on its respective home court, and the Sycamores will be looking to do the same thing this year after dropping its first meeting the Bears on the road earlier this season. ISU is just 2-6 against the Bears in its last eight meetings with MSU, and will be looking for its first win against the Bears since Jan. 25, 2022 in Terre Haute.
A WIN WOULD...
» Give ISU 21 wins for the first time since 2013-14 when the Sycamores won 23. The Sycamores have won 21 or more games in a single season just six times in the Valley era dating back to 1976.
» Give the Sycamores 14 Valley wins for the first time since 1999- 2000 when they won the Valley with a 14-4 league record. Indiana State has won 14 or more Valley games just twice in program history including going 16-0 in league play in 1978-79.
LAST GAME AGAINST THE BEARS
Indiana State got down early and put up a late fight at Missouri State, but could never fully overcome its deficit against the Bears as the Sycamores suffered their second-straight loss in Valley play, 64-62.
After getting down by 13 at 10:26 in the second half, Indiana State outscored Missouri State 23-12 in the last 8:57 and 10-4 in the last 1:10 of the game.
The Missouri State lead reached a game-high 13 points at 52-39 with 10:26 left in the second half but the Sycamores kept themselves in the game, using an 8-2 run over the next four minutes to make it 54-47, and later cut their deficit all the way down to one point with a 7-0 run that made it 60-59 with 31 seconds to go.
The Bears knocked down a couple free throws to put the Sycamores down 62-59, and Indiana State had multiple chances to tie things up but missed a couple threes in the last 11 seconds. Missouri State would hit another pair of free throws with four seconds remaining to go up 64-59, and
Cooper Neese drilled a shot from the logo with 0.7 left on the clock to make it a final score of 64-62.
Cameron Henry led the way for the Sycamores with a team-high 17 points and five rebounds. He shot 6-of-6 from the field with a season-high and Valley-high 3-of-3 from deep.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana State's win streak came to a close in heartbreaking fashion Wednesday night at Belmont as the Sycamores fell 89-88 to the Bruins inside Curb Event Center.
Indiana State used a 10-0 run in the first half to lead Belmont by 17 points at halftime, but it came down to the final seconds of the game when the Sycamores were called for a controversial foul that sent Belmont to the line for a pair of game-winning free throws with two seconds on the clock.
Julian Larry notched his 100th assist of the season early in the first half and finished with a game-high six assists.
Xavier Bledson led Indiana State in scoring with 20 points in his second start of the year, and four other Sycamores scored in double-figures including
Courvoisier McCauley who pulled down a team-high seven boards alongside his 12 points.
ANOTHER BROKEN RECORD
After tying the record last season, the Sycamores officially broke the program record for 3-pointers in a single season Saturday against Illinois State. The record was 270 originally set in 2017-18 but with their six triples Saturday, the Sycamores hit 273 for the season in the game.
SHARING IS CARING
Indiana's State's 27 assists against Murray State Saturday is an all-time program second-best, behind the program record of 34 set in 1983 against West Texas State.
Julian Larry led the way Saturday with a career-high nine assists in the game.
ISU leads the Valley in assists, assists per game and assist-to-turnover ratio while
Julian Larry and
Cameron Henry rank top-10 in the Valley in all three of those categories.
The Sycamores are 14-0 this season when they dish out 15 or more assists.
Cameron Henry notched his 100th assist this season at UIC and becomes the first Sycamore with 100 assists in a season since Jordan Barnes in 2019-20.
Julian Larry joined Henry with 100 assists Wednesday at Belmont, and this is the first time two Sycamores have recorded 100 assists in the same season since Matt Renn and Michael Mesner in 2000-01.
NEW FACE SETS THE PACE
Grad transfer
Courvoisier McCauley leads the way for the Sycamores in his first year at ISU. He leads the team in total points (483, 198 more points than ISU's second/third leading scorers
Cameron Henry and
Robbie Avila with 285 points) while averaging a team-high 16.7 points per game. He also leads the Sycamores on the glass with 5.5 rebounds per game. His 16.7 points per game rank sixth in the Valley, and he's top-20 in the league for total rebounds.
McCauley has three double-doubles this season and is one of just 15 players in the Valley to record three or more on the year. He is one of six Valley players with multiple 30-point outings this season. With nine 20+-point games, McCauley joins just five other Valley players with nine or more this year.
