Late Flurry from Racers Sinks Sycamores on Road

MURRAY, Ky. – Indiana State women's soccer dropped a Thursday evening road matchup at Murray State as the Racers scored three times in the second half to defeat ISU 3-1.

The Racers put the pressure on early, controlling the ball in the first few minutes of action until Indiana State earned a corner kick in the 10th minute of the match which led to a 1-0 Sycamore lead. Josie Bakaitis scored her first collegiate goal with a header to the far post on a corner from Ella Gorrie.

It was the Sycamores second goal of the season from a header and also Gorrie's team-best second assist this year.

CeCe Wahlberg took four of Indiana State's six shot attempts in the first half, coming close on a handful of attempts. The Sycamores limited Murray State to five shot attempts in the first 45 minutes of action with Maddie Alexander making three saves.

To begin the second half of play, Mackenzie Kent narrowly extended the Sycamore lead with a shot just right of the net as Indiana State continued to attack offensively.

The second half would turn into a much more defensive period as both teams attempted just five shots combined and the Racers and Sycamores combined for four yellow cards in a game that saw five in total. Murray State had four while there was just one called on ISU.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the match, Murray State tied it 1-1 as the Sycamores knocked in an own goal to level the contest.

In the 87th minute, Murray State's Mary Hardy scored off Audrey Henry's free kick to take a 2-1 lead. Less than two minutes later, the Racers were able to notch another goal to extend their lead to 3-1. ISU was kept off the board for the final two minutes as Murray State picked up their first ever MVC victory with a 3-1 win.

The Sycamores finished the evening with eight shots with Maddie Alexander making three more saves in the second half to finish with six.

The all-time series is now 4-3-1 led by ISU after the first matchup as Valley opponents.

Wahlberg (82) is now eight shots on goal from surpassing Lauren Podolski (89) for most all-time at ISU while Maddie Alexander is 12 saves from moving into the career top five.
