Sycamores drop Saturday twinbill at Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Karrinna Gall had 16 kills across two matches Saturday and Storm Suhre had 15 kills and nine blocks, but Indiana State dropped both ends of a doubleheader at the Indiana Invitational. The Sycamores fell to Jacksonville State in three sets (25-13, 26-24, 25-11) and Chicago State in four sets (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) inside Wilkinson Hall.

Gall had a team-high seven kills against Jacksonville State while also finishing with five digs. She also had nine kills and 11 digs against Chicago State. Suhre had 11 kills and four blocks against Chicago State, while recording four kills and five blocks against Jacksonville State. Gall, Melina Tedrow and Cadence Gilley all recorded double-digit digs against Chicago State.

Jacksonville State 3, Indiana State 0
JSU got off to a quick start in the opening set, taking a 7-3 lead before three straight Sycamore points, including a Taylor Shelton ace, made it a one-point margin. The teams traded early points before a 6-0 Gamecock run put ISU in a 16-8 hole that it couldn't dig out of. Jacksonville State went on to win the opening set, 25-13.

The Sycamores got off to a strong start in the second set, with Gall netting a kill and an ace to put ISU ahead 4-1. JSU came roaring back with a 5-0 run to take the lead before the teams traded points throughout the middle stages of the set. Jacksonville State used a 6-1 run to put the Sycamores on the ropes late in the set, but Indiana State fended off six straight set points on Gilley's serve to even the set at 24-all. The Sycamore run fell short, however, as the Gamecocks took the last two points to close out a 26-24 set win.

Jacksonville State raced out to an 8-3 lead in the third set and never looked back. The Sycamores had a three-point run, highlighted by kills from both Gall and Suhre, to cut the deficit to two, but a lengthy Gamecock run put the set out of reach. Despite late kills from both Suhre and Mallory Keller, Jacksonville State took the third set 25-11 to complete the sweep.

Chicago State 3, Indiana State 1
Indiana State jumped out to a 6-3 lead on the strength of kills by Suhre, Emma Kaelin and Arika Richardson. A lengthy Chicago State run put the Sycamores in a hole but four straight points, including kills by both Richardson and Jamie Brown, tied the set at 16-apiece. CSU went ahead on a 5-0 run to take the lead and despite saving three straight set points, the Sycamores fell 25-23 in the opening frame.

Chicago State used an early run to go ahead 7-3 in the second set, but the Sycamores bounced right back. A Keller kill and consecutive CSU errors, all on Gilley's serve, tied the set at seven, but Chicago State went on another scoring run to take a seven-point lead in the later stages of the set, 18-11. Indiana State made a late run, taking advantage of multiple CSU errors and blocks by Keller and Suhre, but the Cougars took the second set 25-19 to put the Trees on the ropes.

The Sycamores came out hot to begin the third set, as kills by Kaeiln and Kaitlyn Hamilton, along with a Gall service ace, put ISU ahead 6-2 in the early stages. Indiana State further extended its lead to 14-6 after a 7-1 run with Shelton and Suhre serving. Chicago State rallied to cut ISU's lead to as little as one, but a Suhre service ace and a Jazzlyn Ford kill gave Indiana State its first set win of the season, 25-22.

Indiana State and Chicago State traded early punches in the fourth set, with neither team leading by more than two through the first 12 points. The Cougars used a 7-1 run to take a five-point lead in the middle stages of the set, creating distance between them and the Sycamores. Indiana State got within two following a Gilley ace and a Suhre kill but was unable to come closer, as CSU clinched the match with a 25-22 set win.
