Sycamores-Braves split Saturday doubleheader to open series at Dozer Park

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PEORIA, ILL. – Indiana State and Bradley split the Saturday doubleheader at Dozer Park as the Sycamores won the opening 12-inning contest, 8-5, before falling in the nightcap, 4-3.
 
Luis Hernandez carried the Indiana State (23-15, 8-6 MVC) offense on the day with four extra-base hits, including a two-run home run and three doubles. Matt Jachec and Jack Parisi combined to tie the ISU single game strikeout record with 18 strikeouts in the first game of the day to highlight the Sycamores against Bradley (15-25, 6-8 MVC) on Saturday.
 
Game One: Indiana State 8, Bradley 5 (12 inn.)
Seth Gergely scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning and Sean Ross added a two-run single driving home Jordan Schaffer and Josue Urdaneta as the Sycamores took the series opener on Saturday afternoon, 8-5.
 
The three-run frame snapped a scoreless pitchers' duel running back to the fifth inning as ISU reliever Jack Parisi (4-2) and Bradley reliever Taylor Catton (2-3) traded zeroes on the scoreboard up until the top of the 12th frame. Parisi worked a scoreless bottom of the inning to close out a career-long 5.2-inning relief appearance with Schaffer fielding the grounder up the middle and tossing to Urdaneta for the final out of the contest.
 
Luis Hernandez carried the Sycamores' offense early in the contest with the freshman designated hitter connecting on three hits, including his third home run of the season, to give the Sycamores the early lead. Schaffer, Urdaneta, and Ross added multi-hit games on the day with Ross driving in a team-high three RBI in the win.
 
Matt Jachec went the first 6.1 innings in taking his third consecutive no-decision as the redshirt sophomore struck out a career-high 10 batters in the contest. Jachec allowed eight hits and five runs, while not giving up a walk before turning the ball over to Parisi in the bottom of the seventh. Parisi went the final 5.2 innings allowing three hits and one walk while striking out eight in taking the win.
 
Connor O'Brien had three of Bradley's 11 hits in the loss, while Jack Lincoln homered for the Braves. Connor Manthey and Cal McGinnis added two-hit games as well.
 
Jacob Kisting went the first 7.0 innings for Bradley before turning the ball over to Catton in the eighth. Kisting allowed seven hits and five runs while striking out nine in the no-decision, while Catton surrendered four hits and all three runs in the 12th in taking the loss.
 
How They Scored
  • Bradley took the early 1-0 lead on Connor Manthey's two-out triple to right centerfield scoring Jackson Chatterton in the bottom of the second inning.
  • The Sycamores took their first lead of the ballgame in the top of the fourth as Luis Hernandez followed up Sean Ross' double with a two-run home run into the grass beyond the left field fence to put ISU up 2-1.
  • Jack Lincoln evened the scored for the teams in the bottom of the frame with a two-out solo home run to left field tying the game back up at 2-2.
  • Josue Urdaneta connected on an RBI double to right field scoring Seth Gergely, while Randall Diaz and Sean Ross added sacrifice flies as the Sycamores put together a three-run top of the fifth to go up 5-2.
  • The Braves answered in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game back up at 5-5 as Cal McGinnis doubled home Connor Manthey and Keaton Rice added a two-run single in the inning to highlight the three-run frame.
  • Indiana State pushed across the go-ahead runs in the top of the 12th inning as Randall Diaz's sacrifice fly scored Seth Gergely, while Sean Ross singled home both Jordan Schaffer and Josue Urdaneta to provide the final scoring margin.
Game Two: Bradley 4, Indiana State 3
A late ground-rule double from Keaton Rice led to Carson Husmann's go-ahead sacrifice fly as Indiana State fell in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, 4-3.
 
The Sycamores and Braves were all knotted up for the second consecutive game through five innings. Indiana State took advantage of Josue Urdaneta and Sean Ross RBI singles to take an early lead, while Bradley battled back to leave the game knotted up at 3-3 until the bottom of the eighth inning.
 
Keaton Rice connected on a ground-rule double that hopped over the right field wall with one out in the bottom of the eighth moving Connor O'Brien to third. Carson Husmann connected on the go-ahead sacrifice fly to right field with Sean Ross' throw to the plate off-line to give the Braves a lead they would not relinquish in splitting the doubleheader.
 
Randall Diaz and Luis Hernandez both posted multi-hit games in the loss with Hernandez connecting on a pair of doubles in the loss.
 
Connor Fenlong went a career-long 7.0 innings in taking the no-decision on Saturday evening. The redshirt junior allowed three hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out five. Joey Hurth (5-4) took the loss after allowing one run and two hits in working the eighth inning.
 
Connor O'Brien led Bradley's offense with two of the Braves' five hits in the win. Keaton Rice and Carl Valk both doubled, while Adam Brian scored twice in the evening contest.
 
Matt Hamilton went the first 7.0 innings in taking the no-decision for the Braves. The right-hander scattered eight hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out 11. Troy Hickey (2-1) went the final two innings allowing one hit and one walk while striking out the final ISU batter in taking the win

How They Scored
  • Bradley took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as the Braves took advantage of a pair of Indiana State errors with Ryan Vogel scoring on an errant pickoff throw to go ahead early.
  • Grant Magill evened the game up in the top of the second inning as the Sycamore catcher connected on a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Luis Hernandez to make it a 1-1 ballgame.
  • The Braves retook the lead in the bottom of the frame as Carl Valk connected on a two-out RBI double down the right field line scoring Adam Brian to put BU ahead 2-1.
  • Sean Ross connected on a two-out RBI single under the glove of the Bradley shortstop scoring Seth Gergely in the top of the third inning to tie the game up at 2-2.
  • Josue Urdaneta connected on the RBI single up the middle scoring Seth Gergely in the top of the fifth inning to give ISU the 3-2 lead following the one-out base hit.
  • Bradley took the 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning as Carson Husmann connected on the go-ahead sacrifice fly to right field scoring Connor O'Brien.
News & Notes
  • Luis Hernandez recorded multiple hits in both games on Saturday as the freshman connected on the first three-hit game of the season in the opener, while adding a pair of doubles in the second game for his fourth and fifth multi-hit games of the season.
  • Hernandez's two-run home run was his third of the 2022 season and first since April 10 at Valparaiso.
  • Hernandez finished the day with four extra base hits on the day with a home run and double in the opener, while adding two more doubles in the nightcap.
  • Jordan Schaffer was hit by two pitches in Saturday's opener to extend his Missouri Valley lead to 18 HBPs on the season
  • Indiana State's doubles streak extended to 26 consecutive games on Saturday afternoon as ISU connected on three doubles in the opening game and two more in the night cap.
  • Matt Jachec became the third Indiana State pitcher to record a double-digit strikeout game this season as the redshirt sophomore's 10-strikeout game joined Jack Parisi (13 vs. Merrimack – February 25) and Brennyn Cutts (10 vs. Indiana – April 12).
  • Jachec's 10 strikeouts surpassed his previous career high of nine set on March 19, 2022, against Kansas.
  • Indiana State's duo of Jachec (10) and Jack Parisi (8) combined for 18 strikeouts tying the previous school record mark set according to current statistics on hand. ISU previously recorded 18 strikeouts against Florida International (March 5, 2021) and Kent State (February 15, 2020).
  • Jack Parisi previously had nine strikeouts in a relief appearance against Valparaiso on April 10, 2022.
  • Jordan Schaffer (15), Josue Urdaneta (18), and Sean Ross (16) also posted multi-hit games to add to their season totals in the first game.
  • Indiana State improved to 3-0 this season in extra-inning games with 10-inning wins coming earlier this season at Purdue and at home against Evansville.
  • Connor Fenlong went a career-high 7.0 innings in the second game on Saturday.
  • Grant Magill threw out his 11th and 12th runners attempting to steal a base on the season in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. The first came in the bottom of the seventh, while the second came in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Randall Diaz (12) and Hernandez (5) posted multi-hit games in the Saturday nightcap.
